It's not just the [00:56] destinations. It's about the people you [00:58] experience the destinations with. [01:01] There's something powerful that happens [01:03] when likeminded believers gather [01:05] together, open God's word, and then [01:07] explore the very world where that word [01:10] [music] [01:10] was first proclaimed. Welcome again [03:06] to Pathway to Victory. [music] [03:08] Earth may be our current residence, but [03:11] it's far from our final destination. [03:14] When Jesus ascended [music] into heaven, [03:16] he promised to prepare a place for those [03:18] who put their faith in him. And today [03:20] we're going to look at a wonderful [03:22] passage in Revelation 21 that describes [03:25] the glories of our eternal home. My [03:28] message is titled, "What will heaven be [03:30] like?" on today's edition of Pathway to [03:33] Victory. [03:38] Rod in everlasting [music] [03:40] light, [03:42] your glory [music and singing] [03:44] floods the earth and fills the skies. [03:49] Alm mighty [music] [03:51] [singing] God, [03:54] there's no one like you. [03:58] Mountains [music and singing] tremble [04:00] when you speak. [04:03] I'm [music and singing] listening. Your [04:05] whisper changes everything. [04:10] Almighty [singing and music] [04:11] God, [04:14] there's no one like you. [04:16] Alm mighty [music and singing] [04:18] God. [04:21] There's no one like you. [music] [04:24] You are the Lord [04:28] forever lifted [singing and music] [04:30] high. You are [04:35] compassionate and kind. [04:37] [music and singing] You are Lord. [04:42] [music] Holy, [singing] holy, holy is [04:45] your name. [music] [04:49] Holy, [singing] holy, holy [music] is [04:52] your name. [04:58] [music and singing] [05:02] Heat. Heat. [music] [05:11] [music] [05:12] Yeah. [05:15] Heat. [music] [05:21] [music] [05:25] Heat. [05:26] [music] [05:29] Heat. [05:35] [music] [05:39] Heat. Heat. [05:41] [music] [05:47] [music] [05:50] Heat. [05:53] [music] [05:57] Heat. [music] [06:05] [music] [06:07] Oh, [06:12] [music] [06:21] [music] [06:26] [music] [06:31] [music] [06:36] you've read about miracles like the [06:38] parting of the Red Sea and the raising [06:40] of Lazarus. But have you ever wondered, [06:42] does God still work miracles today? In [06:44] his powerful new book, Divine Invasions, [06:47] Dr. Robert Jeff makes a biblical case [06:49] that our miracleworking God has not gone [06:52] silent. He still intervenes with power, [06:55] provision, protection, and healing. And [06:57] he can even work a miracle in your life. [07:00] Request your copy of Divine Invasions [07:02] when you give a generous gift to support [07:04] the ministry of Pathway to Victory. [07:11] >> [music] [07:14] >> What is heaven going to be like? [07:17] What is it that really awaits us on the [07:21] other side of the grave? [07:24] One writer has said, "Every joy we [07:28] experience here on earth, including the [07:31] joy of reunion with family or friends, [07:35] is only an inkling, only a whisper of [07:39] the true and unending joy that awaits [07:42] us. [07:43] Every spectacular site we view in this [07:46] world, whether it be the Grand Canyon, [07:49] Niagara Falls, or Lake Victoria, those [07:53] sites are only pencil sketches of the [07:56] full full color rendition that will be a [07:59] part of the new heaven and the new [08:01] earth. And yet, as spectacular as heaven [08:05] is going to be, it's amazing how little [08:08] information is in the Bible about what [08:12] heaven is going to be like. I sometimes [08:15] wonder why is that? Why doesn't God tell [08:18] us more about our eternal future? [08:22] Perhaps one reason is God knows we can't [08:24] comprehend what it's really going to be [08:26] like. Remember when Paul was caught up [08:29] into the third heaven, he saw sights so [08:32] spectacular, he didn't write them down. [08:35] He couldn't speak about them. Maybe [08:37] that's one reason we don't know more. We [08:40] just couldn't understand it. No, the [08:42] Bible doesn't tell us everything about [08:44] heaven, but it tells us just enough to [08:49] wet our appetites and to motivate us to [08:52] live obediently for Jesus Christ the [08:55] short time we're here. And today, we're [08:58] going to look at some of that revelation [09:01] about the new heaven and the new earth [09:03] that God has prepared for us as we [09:05] answer the question, what is heaven [09:08] like? If you have your Bibles, turn to [09:10] Revelation chapter 21. We are now in the [09:13] next to the last message in this [09:15] year-long series on the book of [09:18] Revelation. And uh I want you to notice [09:20] that uh John talks about the new heaven [09:23] and new earth in chapter 21 by giving us [09:27] three revelations about the new heaven [09:30] and new earth. And each one begins with [09:33] the phrase and I saw. [09:37] The first revelation is about the new [09:40] heaven and new earth itself. Look at [09:41] verse one. And I saw a new heaven and a [09:46] new earth. For the first heaven and the [09:49] first earth passed away and there is no [09:52] longer any sea. That's fascinating [09:54] because today 3/4ers of the world is [09:58] water. 60% of your bodies are water. And [10:03] yet in the new heaven and new earth, the [10:05] only water that will be there is the [10:07] river of life that we'll look at next [10:09] time. The first thing John saw was the [10:12] new heaven and the new earth. The second [10:15] feature of John's revelation was the [10:18] center of that new heaven and new earth. [10:20] And that was a literal city, the new [10:23] Jerusalem. Look in verses 2 to 4 at the [10:26] characteristics of this new city. John [10:28] says, "And I saw the holy city, New [10:32] Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven [10:35] from God, made ready as a bride adorned [10:39] for her husband." One writer says it [10:42] very well, Paul Marshall, when he [10:44] writes, "This world is our home. We are [10:48] made to live here. Yes, it's been [10:51] devastated by sin, but God plans to put [10:53] it right. Hence we look forward to joy [10:56] to newly restored bodies and to living [10:59] in a newly restored heaven and earth. We [11:03] can love this world because it is God's [11:06] and it will be healed becoming at last [11:09] what God intended from the beginning. [11:12] You know John said do not love the world [11:15] or the things of the world. He wasn't [11:17] talking about the ground. He wasn't [11:19] talking about planet earth. He was [11:21] talking about the world system. don't [11:23] love the world system that is opposed to [11:26] God. But we can love this world because [11:29] one day God is going to restore this [11:32] world to the way it was in Eden to its [11:35] identic state and we are made to dwell [11:37] here forever and ever. Notice in verse [11:41] three, John says, ' And I heard a loud [11:43] voice from the throne, saying, Behold, [11:46] the tabernacle of God is among men, and [11:50] God will dwell among them, and they [11:53] shall be his people, and God himself [11:55] will be among them. Verse four, and God [11:58] will wipe away every tear from their [12:00] eyes, and there shall no longer be any [12:02] death. There shall no longer be any [12:04] mourning or crying or pain, for the [12:07] first things will have passed away. [12:10] That's what John saw. He saw a new [12:13] heaven and a new earth. And he saw the [12:16] new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven [12:19] to earth. This city, the new Jerusalem, [12:22] will be the centerpiece of the new [12:25] heaven and the new earth. Notice the [12:27] architect of this city. The fact that [12:30] there's going to be a literal city that [12:32] will be the capital of the new heaven [12:34] and new earth is no mystery. We found [12:37] that in scripture from the very [12:38] beginning. Remember in Hebrews 11:10 it [12:42] says for Abraham was looking for a what? [12:46] He was looking for the city which has [12:49] foundations whose architect and builder [12:52] is God. Now I want you to notice the [12:56] member of the Godhead who is responsible [12:59] for designing [13:01] and building this new Jerusalem. He [13:05] identifies himself in verse 5 of [13:07] Revelation 21. And he who sits on the [13:10] throne said, "Behold, I am making all [13:14] things new." And he said, "Write, for [13:17] these words are faithful and true." [13:19] Apparently, John was so overwhelmed by [13:21] what he was seeing, he forgot to keep [13:23] writing. [13:25] The Lord says, "Keep on writing because [13:27] everything you're seeing is faithful and [13:29] true." Then he said to me, "It is done. [13:32] I am the alpha and omega, the beginning [13:35] and the end. I will give to the one who [13:37] thirst from the spring of the water of [13:39] life without cost." Who is it that is [13:42] the builder of this new city? He said, [13:45] "I am the Alpha and Omega." That's the [13:47] same description Jesus used of himself [13:50] in Revelation 18. Alpha, the first [13:53] letter of the Greek alphabet. Omega, the [13:55] last. I'm the beginning and the end. I [13:58] am all in all. What I want you to see is [14:02] Jesus Christ, the son of God, is the one [14:06] who designs and builds this new city. [14:11] Who are going to be the inhabitants of [14:13] this city, the new Jerusalem? Let's look [14:16] and see how God answers that question in [14:18] verse 7. He who overcomes [14:22] will inherit these things and I will be [14:25] his God and he will be my son. The only [14:29] people who are going to have a place in [14:32] this new Jerusalem are those who are [14:36] overcomers. [14:38] Now what does he mean overcomers? [14:41] He used that same term in Revelation [14:43] 3:5. He said, "He who overcomes will [14:46] thus be clothed in white garments, and I [14:49] will not erase his name from the book of [14:51] life, and I will confess his name before [14:53] my father and before his angels." What I [14:58] want you to see is this phrase [15:00] overcomers is not referring to some [15:03] special class of superch Christians. The [15:06] term overcomers is used by John to refer [15:09] to all believers, all true believers in [15:12] Christ. Those who truly believe in [15:15] Christ are going to obey Christ. They're [15:17] going to overcome the trials and [15:19] temptations of this world. John said [15:22] that in his little epistle called First [15:24] John in chapter 5:es 4 to 5. For [15:27] whatever is born of God does what? [15:30] Overcomes the world. And this is the [15:33] victory that has overcome the world, our [15:36] faith. Who is the one who overcomes the [15:38] world? But he who believes that Jesus is [15:42] the son of God. [16:30] Thank you for being here with us today [16:31] on YouTube. Now, let's get back to [16:34] today's message. If you overcome, if [16:38] you're victorious in living for Christ [16:40] in this world, you have a place in the [16:43] New Jerusalem. [16:44] But notice, who will not be in the New [16:47] Jerusalem? Who will not be a part of the [16:50] kingdom of God? Don't let anybody tell [16:52] you that everybody's going to heaven. [16:54] Everybody is not going to be in heaven. [16:56] And in verse 8, John explains who's not [16:59] going to be there. But for the cowardly [17:02] and unbelieving and abominable and [17:04] murderers and immoral persons and [17:07] sorcerers and idolattors and all liars, [17:10] their part will be in the lake that [17:12] burns with fire and brimstone, which is [17:15] the second death. Have you heard people [17:17] say, "I don't like that fire and [17:18] brimstone kind of preaching. [17:21] People who say they don't like that [17:23] better get used to it because that's [17:24] where they're going to be. You can't [17:27] believe the Bible and not believe in [17:29] fire and brimstone. You know, this list [17:31] is similar to what Paul said in 1 [17:33] Corinthians 6:es 9 to11. [17:37] Listen to Paul's words. Or do you not [17:40] know that the unrighteous will not [17:43] inherit the kingdom of God? [17:46] Don't be deceived. Neither fornicators, [17:50] nor idoltors, nor adulterers, nor [17:53] effeminate, nor homosexuals. He goes on, [17:57] nor thieves, nor covetous, nor [17:59] drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers. [18:02] None of these will inherit the kingdom [18:04] of God. Now, this passage is not saying [18:08] that if you've ever done one of these [18:09] things, you can't be saved. Paul says in [18:12] verse 11, "And such were some of you [18:15] Corinthian Christians, but you were [18:19] washed. You were sanctified. You were [18:22] justified in the name of the Lord Jesus [18:24] Christ and in the spirit of our God." [18:28] Listen to me. I don't care what sin [18:30] you've committed, how long you've [18:32] committed it, how deep the stain of your [18:34] sin. If you have trusted in the blood of [18:36] Jesus Christ to cleanse you, to forgive [18:38] you, you are saved and secure forever. [18:42] You have a place in heaven. That is the [18:44] gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no sin [18:48] you can commit for which you cannot be [18:51] forgiven. But if you've truly repented [18:55] of that sin, if you've truly asked for [18:58] God's forgiveness from that sin, you are [19:01] not going to go back and regularly [19:04] practice that sin. No one who practices [19:08] these sins has a place in the kingdom of [19:11] God. That is what John is saying here. [19:15] We've looked at the inhabitants of the [19:17] city. Let's look at the description of [19:20] the city. Verse 9. Then one of the seven [19:23] angels who had the seven bowls full of [19:26] the seven last plagues came and spoke [19:28] with me, saying, "Come up here and I [19:30] will show you the bride, the wife of the [19:32] lamb." And John says, "The angel carried [19:35] me away in the spirit to a great and [19:37] high mountain and showed me the holy [19:39] city, Jerusalem, coming down out of the [19:43] heaven from God." Look at verse 11. [19:47] having the glory of God. Her brilliance [19:50] was like a very costly stone as a stone [19:54] of crystalclear [19:56] jasper. The word translated jasper could [20:00] be any number of stones. Most people [20:02] think it's a diamond. A and what John is [20:06] communicating here, and we'll see it [20:08] over and over again in this chapter, is [20:10] this city is going to be flooded with [20:13] light. It's going to be absolutely [20:16] filled with light. That is the chief [20:18] characteristic of this new city, the new [20:21] Jerusalem. [20:22] I love this about the new Jerusalem. [20:24] It's going to be a place of light. Now [20:26] look at verse 12. And it had a great and [20:30] high wall with 12 gates. And at the [20:34] gates 12 angels, and names were written [20:37] on them, which are the names of the 12 [20:39] tribes of the son of Israel. And not [20:41] only that, look at verse 14. And the [20:43] wall of the city had 12 foundation [20:46] stones and on them were the 12 names of [20:48] the apostles of the lamb. Here I think [20:51] you have a coming together of believing [20:53] Israel and the church. Right now they're [20:55] distinct. God has a plan for believing [20:57] Israel. He has a plan for the church. [21:00] But I think that distinction will be [21:02] gone in the new heaven and the new [21:04] earth. The two come together. Now look [21:07] at verse 15. To me this is the most [21:10] fascinating part of all of this. The one [21:12] who spoke with me had a gold measuring [21:15] rod to measure the city and its gates [21:18] and its wall. Have you ever worried that [21:20] heaven's not going to be big enough to [21:22] accommodate everybody? Look at this. [21:24] Verse 16. And the city is laid out as a [21:26] square, and its length is as great as [21:29] its width. And the angel measured the [21:32] city with the rod, and its 1500 miles. [21:35] Its length and its width and height are [21:40] equal. 1500 miles by 1500 miles by 1500 [21:44] miles. Now, let's forget the height for [21:46] a moment and just look at the square [21:50] mileage here, length and width. 1,500 [21:53] miles times 1500 miles would mean that [21:56] this city has a surface area of over 2 [22:00] million square miles. Now to put that in [22:04] perspective for you, New York City, that [22:08] little island of Manhattan [22:10] that has about 9 million people in it, [22:13] is a puny 305 square miles. Here you [22:18] have a city that is 2 million square [22:22] miles. [22:23] That is one big city. But remember, it's [22:28] not just a square. It's a cube. Not only [22:31] is it 1500 miles by 1500 miles in [22:34] height, it is also 1500 miles. [22:38] You know how big that is? [22:41] Uh the average uh story on a skyscraper [22:44] is 12 feet high. Each story of a [22:47] skyscraper is 12 feet high. That means [22:51] this city, if it is 1,500 miles high, it [22:55] means it would be over 660,000 [22:59] stories. [23:01] Each story having more than 2 million [23:05] square feet. That blows the mind. Now, I [23:09] know what some of you are thinking. [23:10] Well, surely he has to be speaking [23:12] symbolically. We're not to take that [23:14] literally, are we? Look at verse 17. And [23:17] the angel measured its walls 72 yards, [23:21] which probably refers to the thickness, [23:23] according to human measurements, which [23:26] are also angelic measurements. [23:30] Now look at verse 18. The material of [23:33] the wall was jasper, and the city was [23:36] pure gold like clear glass, and the [23:39] foundation stones of the city were [23:41] adorned with every kind of precious [23:44] stone. And then you find a listing of [23:46] all of those stones names that we cannot [23:48] pronounce. [23:50] But what they communicate to us is [23:52] heaven is going to be a spectrum of [23:55] beautiful colors. It's going to be more [23:57] gorgeous, more beautiful than anything [24:00] you can possibly imagine. John says, "I [24:03] saw a new heaven and new earth. I saw a [24:06] new city, the new Jerusalem." There's [24:07] one final thing he talks about, a new [24:10] relationship with God. Look at verse 22. [24:13] And I saw there was no temple in the [24:16] city for the Lord God the Almighty and [24:19] the Lamb or its temple. There'll be no [24:21] church buildings. There will be no [24:23] temples. [24:24] In the Old Testament, the temple [24:26] earlier, the tabernacle was a place to [24:28] offer sacrifices to reconcile man to [24:31] God. That will no longer be needed. Man [24:34] will be in perfect relationship with [24:35] God. And look at verse 23. And the city [24:39] has no need of the sun or of the moon to [24:41] shine on it. For the glory of God has [24:44] illumined it, and its lamp is the lamb. [24:46] The nations will walk by its light, and [24:49] the kings of the earth will bring their [24:50] glory into it in the daytime. For there [24:53] will be no night there. Its gates will [24:57] never be closed, and they will bring the [24:59] glory and the honor of the nations into [25:02] it, and nothing unclean. No one who [25:05] practices abomination and lying shall [25:07] ever come into the city, but only those [25:10] whose names are written in the Lamb's [25:12] book of life. You know, one of the [25:15] mistakes we make when we think about [25:17] eternity is we separate eternity from [25:20] our existence here on earth, we think [25:23] that when we die and when we go to [25:26] either heaven or hell, somehow we [25:28] magically become other people. [25:30] No, when we die, it's not somebody else [25:33] who goes to heaven or hell. It is we who [25:36] go to heaven or hell. [25:38] Heaven or hell is just a continuum of [25:42] the life we begin living here on earth. [25:45] Randy Alorn says it well when he says, [25:48] "Earth leads directly into heaven just [25:52] as it leads directly into hell." [25:56] Life here on earth is a running start [25:59] into one place or the other. Heaven and [26:02] hell are both retroactive to earth. The [26:05] best of earth is a glimpse of heaven. [26:09] The worst part of earth is a glimpse [26:11] [music] of hell. Earth is the in between [26:15] world touched both by heaven and hell [26:19] affording a choice for us between the [26:22] two. [26:29] Revelation chapter 21 gives us an [26:32] exquisite taste of heaven. And I hope [26:34] this picture of your eternal destiny [26:37] motivates you to follow Jesus Christ [26:39] with all of your heart. [music] Pointing [26:41] people toward that hope is the reason [26:43] Pathway to Victory exists. This year, [26:46] we're celebrating 30 [music] years of [26:48] ministry. And by God's grace, that same [26:50] hope is reaching more people in more [26:53] places [music] than ever before. The [26:55] message that launched this ministry in [26:58] 1996 hasn't changed, and neither has our [27:01] commitment [music] to scripture. Your [27:03] gift keeps it going out every day to [27:05] everyone who needs to [music] hear the [27:07] gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for [27:10] standing so faithfully with us. Please [27:13] stay right [music] there and I'll be [27:14] back in just a moment with more Pathway [27:17] to Victory. Our world is growing darker [27:20] by the day. But the book of Revelation [27:22] teaches that one day soon the darkness [27:24] will pass and our long- awaited King of [27:27] Kings and Lord of Lords will return and [27:29] make his final conquest. The book of [27:32] Revelation isn't just the unveiling of [27:34] future events. It's the unveiling [27:37] [music] of a person, Jesus Christ. And [27:40] in Final Conquest, my exclusive [27:43] commentary on [music] Revelation, you'll [27:45] discover the great hope we have in the [27:47] triumphant return of our Lord Jesus [27:50] Christ. [27:52] Request your copy of Final Conquest when [27:54] you give a generous gift to support the [27:56] ministry of Pathway to Victory or when [27:58] you become a Pathway partner. And when [28:01] your ministry gift is $125 or more, [28:04] we'll also send you Dr. Jefferson's [28:06] book, Mysteries of the End Times, a [28:09] clear guide to your questions about the [28:10] rapture, the Tribulation, and the Return [28:13] of Christ, along with the complete Final [28:16] Conquest teaching series on DVD video [28:18] and MP3 format audio disc. [music] [28:20] >> And these line up exactly with the seven [28:23] sealed judgments we see in Revelation [28:27] 6. In light of current events and with [28:30] [music] the return of Christ so clearly [28:32] on the horizon, sharing the gospel [28:34] through Pathway to Victory has never [28:35] been more important [music] or more [28:37] urgent. So, thank you for supporting [28:39] Pathway to Victory as together we pierce [28:42] the darkness of our day [music] with the [28:44] light of God's word. [28:48] Many people are surprised by how little [28:50] the Bible tells us about heaven. But it [28:53] tells us just enough to wet our [28:55] appetites [music] and to motivate us to [28:57] live obediently for Jesus Christ. Our [29:00] eternal home will be far better than [29:02] anyone could possibly imagine. And next [29:05] time we'll reach the end of Revelation [29:07] and see a preview of what God has [29:09] prepared [music] for us for all [29:10] eternity. Stay tuned for a preview of [29:13] what's coming up next in our [music] [29:14] series, Final Conquest. [29:19] The end of anything is sad [29:23] except for the end of the Bible. Because [29:28] when we come to the end of the Bible, we [29:30] find it's not the end. It is just the [29:32] beginning of a brand new existence [29:35] [music] God has prepared for those who [29:38] know Jesus Christ. Set your DVR and join [29:41] us next time for the message, The King [29:44] is Coming, here on Pathway to Victory.
