[00:29] From the pulpit of the First Baptist [00:31] Church of Dallas, Texas, this is Pathway [00:34] to Victory with Dr. Robert Jeff. [00:37] Hi, I'm Robert Jeff and welcome again to [00:40] Pathway to [music] Victory. In [00:41] Revelation chapter 20, the Apostle John [00:44] describes a mysterious millennial [00:46] kingdom during which Jesus will rule [00:49] over the earth. And since the time of [00:51] its writing, theologians have debated [00:53] how we should interpret John's vision. [00:56] Will Jesus establish a literal kingdom [00:59] here on earth? And if so, over whom will [01:01] Jesus rule? Well, my goal today is to [01:04] bring [music] clarity on this important [01:06] topic. My message is titled the coming [01:09] kingdom. On today's edition of [music] [01:12] Pathway to Victory, [01:14] >> I may [singing] not know what's ahead, [01:19] but I know [01:22] who he is. [01:25] He is my [singing] hope and my [music] [01:28] defense. A love that never [singing] [01:31] ends. That's just who he is. [01:36] He's my [music and singing] anchor in [01:37] the ways. He's my healer in the pain. [01:41] He's my compass when I [music] can't [01:44] [singing] see the way. [01:47] He's my [music] ever present help in [01:50] time of need. My strength when [music] I [01:53] am weak. That's the [singing] reason I [01:55] say [01:57] I may not [music] know who I am. [02:01] [singing] [02:03] But I know [02:05] who he is. [music] [02:08] He is my hope and my dis love that [02:13] [music] never ends. That's just who he [02:18] [music and singing] [02:22] was. [music] [02:25] But I know [02:27] who he is. [02:30] [music] He is my [singing] [02:35] love that never ends. just who he is. [02:40] [singing and music] [02:43] Oh, [02:46] that's [music] just who he is. [singing] [02:49] He's never going to let me [music] go. [02:54] I just want to [music] make you know who [02:57] he is. His joy in the morning. [03:03] [music and singing] [03:05] is myior in my [03:09] [music] [03:17] head. [music] [03:19] BUT I know [03:22] he [03:25] is I [03:27] might [music] [03:30] NEVER [03:36] [music] know what I am. [03:41] But I know [03:44] who he is. [03:47] He is my heart. He is my [03:51] love that never [music] [03:58] [music] [04:03] [music and singing] [04:10] [music] [04:18] Does God still invade our ordinary lives [04:21] with [music] the miraculous? I'm [04:23] convinced he still does. In my book, [04:26] Divine Invasions, I walk through what [04:27] the Bible actually teaches about [04:29] miracles. I wrote this book because I [04:32] believe God hasn't stopped doing the [04:34] impossible. And I want you [music] to [04:36] experience it in your own life starting [04:39] today. Get your copy of Divine Invasions [04:42] and discover the miracle working power [04:44] [music] of our almighty God. [04:56] The first view is the a millennial [05:00] position of the kingdom. Amillennial [05:04] in Greek that word a letter A is an [05:08] alpha primitive. Anytime a appears [05:10] before the word, it negates it. It means [05:13] no. The amillennial position means no [05:18] millennium. And there are many [05:20] Christians who believe that. Many good [05:22] Christians uh many of those who [05:25] subscribe to reformed theology believe [05:27] in the a millennial position that there [05:30] is no literal kingdom of heaven on earth [05:34] for a thousand years. The second view of [05:37] the millennium is what is called the [05:39] postmillennial view. Post means after. [05:43] When does Christ come? He comes after [05:47] the millennium. This is the idea that [05:50] the world is going to get better and [05:52] better and better and finally it will be [05:55] in such wonderful shape that Christ [05:57] says, "I can't stay in heaven any [05:59] longer. I've got to come to this perfect [06:00] world that man has created and rule over [06:03] man." That's the post-millennial [06:05] position. This idea has resurfaced in [06:09] the last few decades. It just has a [06:11] different name to it. It's called [06:13] Christian reconstructionism or [06:15] dominionism. [06:18] It is the idea that as Christians, we [06:20] need to reclaim this earth for God. And [06:24] through electing the right public [06:26] officials, by praying, by a spiritual [06:29] revival, we can reclaim this earth for [06:32] God. We can reclaim Washington DC. We [06:36] can reclaim Hollywood. We can reclaim [06:39] Wall Street by getting Christians into [06:41] places of power. We can take this world [06:44] back over. We can have dominion over the [06:47] world. Now, some of you may be saying, [06:50] "Well, pastor, that kind of sounds like [06:52] you." [06:54] In fact, I am often accused of being a [06:57] reconstructionist, a dominionist, [06:59] because I talk about the importance of [07:02] electing the right public officials and [07:04] trying to fight for the right beliefs [07:07] like the pro-life or pro-religious [07:09] liberty position. But here's the [07:12] difference. I'm not under any illusion [07:14] that by doing so, we're going to create [07:17] the millennium here on earth or we're [07:20] going to rule over this earth without [07:22] Christ. Not at all. I sympathize with [07:26] the words of my friend Cal Thomas who [07:28] said, "The kingdom of God is not going [07:30] to come riding in on Air Force One." We [07:33] don't expect that at all. Instead, the [07:36] reason we're to penetrate society is to [07:40] not prevent its decay, [music] but to [07:43] delay its decay. To give this world a [07:47] little longer before it collapses for us [07:50] to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. [07:52] That's what changes people the gospel of [07:55] Jesus Christ. Now the third view is the [07:58] premillennial view. That's the view I [08:00] subscribe to and many of you do. Pre [08:03] means before and that is we believe that [08:06] Christ must come before the millennium. [08:08] Only he will be able to institute his [08:11] reign here on earth. Now with that [08:15] introduction, we're ready to get into [08:17] the text. We're only going to look at [08:19] the first six verses about the beginning [08:22] of the millennium. And it starts with [08:23] the binding of Satan. Look at chapter 20 [08:26] verse one. Then John says, "I saw an [08:29] angel coming down from heaven holding [08:32] the key of the abyss and a great chain [08:35] in his hand." What is the abyss? Abyssas [08:39] refers to a bottomless pit. [08:42] This is a place we've looked at before [08:44] in scripture. It is a place of torment [08:50] for a certain group of demons, angels [08:54] who had fallen and rebelled against God [08:57] in a specific way. It's referred to in 2 [09:00] Peter 2:4 and in Jude verse 6. I think [09:05] uh these are the uh demons who [09:09] cohabitated with the daughters of men in [09:12] Genesis 6. And because of that [09:14] particular sin, they were immediately [09:16] judged and sent to this place of [09:19] confinement called the abyss or the [09:22] bottomless pit. You remember in Luke [09:25] 8:31 when the Garazine demoniac, the man [09:28] filled with demons was uh exercised by [09:31] Jesus. And when those demons left the [09:34] man, they begged Jesus, "Lord, do not [09:37] throw us into the abyss." Even they [09:40] didn't want to go to that place. It was [09:42] so horrible. We saw this place in [09:44] Revelation 9:es 1 and two, the fifth [09:48] trumpet judgment when a fallen angel was [09:51] allowed to release a group of demonic uh [09:54] scorpions to spread all over the earth. [09:58] But now we have a heavenly angel who has [10:01] been given a key and a chain for what [10:05] purpose? Look at verse two. And this [10:08] angel laid hold of the dragon, the [10:12] serpent of old, who is the devil and [10:15] Satan, and he bound him for a thousand [10:18] years. Remember last time in chapter 19, [10:20] we saw that at the battle of Armageddon, [10:23] uh the Antichrist and the false prophet [10:26] are seized by an angel and they are cast [10:29] into the lake of fire. But what about [10:31] the third part of that satanic trinity, [10:33] Satan himself? Well, he has a special [10:36] destiny. That is this angel takes him [10:39] and bounds him for a thousand years. In [10:41] other words, to put him into this place [10:44] called the abyss, the bottomless pit. I [10:47] want you to notice the four names that [10:49] are used to describe Satan. He's called [10:51] a dragon. That refers to his beastly [10:54] character. We saw it in Revelation 12:3, [10:57] a red dragon ready to devour Christ and [11:00] the church. Uh, [11:04] Satan doesn't usually appear that way as [11:07] a dragon. If people saw him as he really [11:10] is, they would run as far and as fast [11:12] from him as they could. He's called the [11:14] dragon. He's called the serpent, [11:16] referring to his subtle nature. [11:20] Remember, when the serpent appeared to [11:21] Eve, it wasn't as a dragon. She wouldn't [11:23] have been compelled to follow him. He [11:25] appeared as a beautiful creature. And uh [11:29] many times Satan appears that way to us. [11:32] Um Paul says he can appear as an angel [11:34] of light. Thirdly, he's called the [11:37] devil. Diabolos in Greek. It means [11:40] slanderer. One of the things Satan does [11:43] is he accuses God's people day and night [11:46] before the throne of God according to [11:49] Revelation 12:10. But this word diabolos [11:52] also refers to his diabolical [11:55] nature. In John 8:44, Jesus called him a [11:59] murderer from the beginning. [12:02] Okay, I'll admit it. This is the part [12:03] where I stop preaching just for a second [12:06] and make a little bit of an ask. You're [12:09] here, you're watching, and that tells me [12:11] something about you. You're serious [12:13] about God's word. So, let's make sure [12:16] you never lose track of us. Three things [12:18] I'm asking you to do. Hit subscribe. [12:21] Click the bell. That's how we'll tap you [12:23] on the shoulder every time something new [12:26] drops. And then go to the program notes. [12:28] There's a free resource down there with [12:30] your name on it. No donation, no catch, [12:33] just something I want to put in your [12:35] hands. Are you finished? Great. Let's [12:38] get back to today's message. [12:41] You know, you read in the media these [12:43] horrible accounts of men who kidnap [12:47] children or kidnap other women and do [12:50] horrible things to them. Torture and [12:53] things that can't even be described. And [12:55] you wonder where does that come from? It [12:58] comes from Satan himself. The diabolical [13:01] nature of Satan, Diabolos. And then [13:05] finally he refers to him as Satan [13:08] himself. The word Satan means adversary, [13:11] enemy. He is the enemy of Jesus and he [13:15] is the enemy of everyone who would [13:16] follow Jesus. Whether you know it or [13:19] not, Satan has you in his crosshairs. [13:23] He's got a big X on your back and he's [13:26] looking to take you out any way he can [13:29] to destroy you and everything that is [13:31] important to you. That's why First Peter [13:34] 5'8 says, "Be of sober of spirit. Be on [13:37] the alert, for your adversary, the [13:40] devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, [13:43] seeking someone to devour. Look at verse [13:46] three. And he threw him, that is Satan, [13:49] into the abyss and shut it and sealed it [13:52] over him so that he would not deceive [13:54] the nations any longer until the [13:57] thousand years were completed. And after [14:00] these things, he must be released for a [14:02] short time. He is going to be bound for [14:06] a thousand years so that he can do [14:10] nothing on the earth for a thousand [14:11] years during this millennium, the [14:13] thousand-year reign of Christ. And this [14:16] is the predominant feature of the [14:18] millennium. It is a time when Satan is [14:22] bound, which makes the amillennial [14:24] position so uh ludicrous. Satan is in no [14:28] way bound right now. Look around you. [14:31] Look in your own world at what's [14:33] happening. Satan seems to be running [14:35] rampant all over the world. But his time [14:38] is short. There is coming a time when he [14:40] will be bound for a thousand years. Now, [14:44] I want you to notice one other aspect of [14:46] the millennium that God reveals to John. [14:50] Look at verse four. After Satan has been [14:52] bound, look at what John says he saw. I [14:56] saw thrones and they that sat upon them [14:59] and judgment was given to them. [15:02] John said at the beginning of the [15:04] millennium, I saw a group of people [15:05] sitting on thrones. Who are these? Well, [15:08] that's you. That's me. Remember in [15:10] Revelation 4:4, the church, the 24 [15:14] elders are seen on uh before the throne [15:17] of God in heaven. And now we're seated [15:19] on thrones. Part of our responsibility [15:21] in the millennium will be ruling and [15:23] reigning with Jesus over the earth that [15:26] he has subdued. John says, I saw [15:29] thrones, people already raised in their [15:32] resurrected bodies. That's you and me. [15:34] And then he said, "And I saw the souls [15:36] of those who had been beheaded because [15:38] of their testimony of Jesus and because [15:40] of the word of God and those who had not [15:43] worshiped the beast or his image and had [15:45] not received the mark on their forehead [15:47] or on their hand. and they came to life [15:51] and also reigned with Christ for a [15:53] thousand years. Who is he talking about [15:55] here? He's talking about those people [15:58] who were saved during the tribulation [16:00] and were martyed, beheaded for their [16:02] faith. He said, "I saw them as well and [16:06] they came to life and reigned with [16:09] Christ." Wait a minute. I thought if a [16:12] Christian died, I thought immediately he [16:16] was alive in the presence of God. To be [16:18] absent from the body is to be at home [16:20] with the Lord. But here it says they [16:23] didn't come to life until Christ [16:25] returned in the beginning of the [16:27] millennium. That phrase came to life is [16:31] the Greek word anasttoasis, [16:33] resurrection. It refers to the physical [16:36] body coming to life, not the spirit. The [16:39] moment you die or any Christian dies, [16:42] you don't cease to exist. You don't go [16:43] into soul sleep or purgatory. The Bible [16:46] says in 2 Corinthians 5'8, to be absent [16:48] from the body is to be at home with the [16:50] Lord. You're alive the moment you die if [16:54] you're a Christian. But there's a time [16:56] that you receive your resurrected body. [16:59] And for these tribulation saints, it [17:01] will be when Christ comes at the second [17:04] coming at the beginning of the [17:05] millennium. And then he adds this word [17:08] in verse five. [17:10] The rest of the dead did not come to [17:13] life until the thousand years were [17:15] completed. Who is that? That's the [17:18] unsaved dead. Again, we'll look at that [17:20] next week. They are raised for judgment. [17:23] But then he says, "This is the first [17:25] resurrection." Everything he has just [17:27] described in verse four. And he adds [17:30] this word, blessed and holy is the one [17:33] who has a part in the first resurrection [17:35] over the second death has no power. But [17:39] they will be priests of God and of [17:41] Christ and will reign with him for a [17:43] thousand years. Here John introduces an [17:47] important concept to understand in the [17:49] Bible. There are two resurrections. [17:53] The first resurrection is the [17:55] resurrection of saved people and they [17:57] are raised to experience God's blessing [18:00] for eternity. But the second [18:03] resurrection is a resurrection of the [18:05] unsaved. They are raised from the dead [18:09] to experience God's torment forever and [18:12] ever. And that's why John says, [18:15] "Blessed, happy is the person who's a [18:17] part of the first resurrection." [18:20] Let's in closing look at this first [18:22] resurrection for just a moment. Who does [18:25] it encompass and how does it work? Paul [18:29] explains it in 1 Corinthians 15 20 to [18:32] 24. He says, "But now Christ has been [18:35] raised from the dead and the first [18:37] fruits of those who are asleep. For [18:40] since by a man came death, by a man also [18:43] came the resurrection of the dead. For [18:45] as in Adam all die, so also in Christ [18:48] all will be made alive, but each in his [18:52] own order. If you are in Christ, you're [18:56] going to receive a brand new body, but [18:59] you have to wait your turn. There is an [19:02] order to which people will receive their [19:05] new bodies. That word order is a [19:08] military term, taggma. It refers to a [19:12] military parade that gets larger and [19:16] larger as different core fall into place [19:20] in the parade at a particular spot along [19:23] the parade route. Can you picture that [19:25] in your mind? There's a leader of the [19:27] parade and as it goes further and [19:30] further, different core fall into place [19:32] and that parade gets larger and larger. [19:35] Paul is using that imagery to say [19:37] there's a parade of Christians headed to [19:39] heaven and everybody will fall into line [19:42] at their particular place in history. [19:46] The first resurrection is not a single [19:49] event in time. It refers to a group of [19:51] people who receive their resurrection [19:53] body at their appointed time. And I've [19:56] shown you that on your outline. I've [19:58] given you a chart that shows the parade [20:01] to heaven. Who receives their body when? [20:04] First of all, Paul says Christ and the [20:08] first fruits. That refers to Jesus, of [20:12] course, but also those who were raised [20:14] with Jesus when he was resurrected. Did [20:16] you know there were several people who [20:19] were raised from the dead when Christ [20:20] was raised from the dead, Matthew 27:52, [20:24] the first fruits, that's the sample of [20:26] the harvest that is yet to come. Christ [20:29] in a select few. And then the next group [20:33] that receives their resurrection body [20:35] will include you and me, the dead in [20:39] Christ, and those alive at the rapture. [20:43] The Bible says the next event is going [20:45] to be the rapture of the church. If [20:47] we're alive at that time, we will be [20:50] caught up to meet the Lord in the air. [20:52] And at that moment, 1 Corinthians 15 [20:54] says, we'll be changed in a moment, in [20:56] the twinkling of an eye. [20:59] If you have a loved one who has already [21:00] died and they're a Christian, their [21:02] spirit is already in heaven, but their [21:06] bodies will be raised from the grave and [21:08] they will receive a brand new [21:10] resurrected body. That all happens at [21:13] the rapture. That's what 1B is. 7 years [21:17] later after the tribulation, that's when [21:19] the tribulation saints, those who were [21:22] martyed during the tribulation, as well [21:24] as I believe the Old Testament saints [21:26] will receive their new bodies. Now, what [21:30] I want you to see is both 1B and 1 C are [21:35] all covered by this phrase in 1 [21:37] Corinthians 15:23, those who are Christ [21:40] at his coming. His coming includes both [21:44] the rapture and seven years later his [21:46] his second coming. You see, both the [21:50] rapture and the second coming include a [21:53] coming of Christ, so to speak. At the [21:55] rapture, he comes into the clouds and [21:57] we're caught up to meet him. At the [21:59] second coming, he comes to earth. [22:01] Different events, but they're similar in [22:04] that they both involve Christ coming. [22:06] That's why you have one B and one C. And [22:09] then finally the last group are those [22:11] who died during the millennium. And at [22:13] the millennium they will receive their [22:16] new bodies. Then comes the end when he [22:18] hands over the kingdom to the God and [22:20] father when he has abolished all rule, [22:22] authority and power. There will be some [22:25] Christians who enter in the millennium [22:27] in their natural bodies. We'll talk [22:29] about this next week. They will die. [22:31] They will receive their bodies at the [22:33] end of the millennium. But the point is, [22:36] even though it happens throughout [22:37] history, all of these people are still [22:40] part of that group called the first [22:42] resurrection. [22:44] But then there is a second resurrection. [22:46] Verse 5 says, "The rest of the dead did [22:49] not come until the thousand years were [22:51] completed." These are the people who are [22:53] raised for the great white throne [22:56] judgment that we'll look at next time. [22:58] They are raised not to experience God's [23:00] blessing, but to experience his torment. [23:05] If there is one truth I want to leave [23:07] you with that comes from this passage, [23:10] it is this. [23:12] When we die, [23:15] we do not cease to exist. [23:18] Death is not the end [23:21] for anyone, Christian or non-Christian. [23:24] Instead, physical death is just the [23:27] doorway through which we enter into [23:29] eternity. [23:31] An eternity of God's blessing or an [23:34] eternity of God's judgment. [23:38] CS Lewis said one time, "Our lives can [23:42] be compared to a very, very long book. [23:46] Our life here on earth is just the cover [23:49] page, [23:51] the title page. [23:53] Chapter one of our story doesn't begin [23:56] with our birth. [23:58] It begins with our death. [24:01] Let me ask you the allimportant [24:03] question. [24:05] When that trumpet sounds and God's [24:08] people in this age are called to assume [24:12] their place in that parade to heaven, [24:16] are you going to be one of those invited [24:18] to participate? [24:20] Are you going to be welcomed into the [24:22] presence of God for all eternity? [24:25] Blessed is he who is a part of the first [24:29] resurrection. [24:30] For over him the second death [music] [24:32] has no power. [24:40] That's one of the many promises of God [24:42] found in the book of Revelation. And [24:44] it's my prayer that everyone within the [24:46] sound of my voice will seize the [24:49] opportunity to become part of the first [24:52] resurrection. [24:53] Let me take a moment to thank the [24:55] [music] partners God is bringing [24:56] alongside Pathway to Victory. This year, [24:59] we're celebrating 30 years of ministry. [25:02] And we couldn't provide these daily [25:04] programs without friends [music] [25:05] just like you. Because of our [25:07] partnership, the truth of God's word is [25:10] going out across television, radio, and [25:12] online, reaching people who might never [25:15] hear it otherwise. Thank you for [music] [25:17] helping carry this message forward to [25:20] future generations. Now, stay right [25:23] there. I'll be back with [music] more [25:24] Pathway to Victory in just a moment. [25:27] Our world is growing darker by the day. [25:30] But the book of Revelation teaches that [25:32] one day soon the darkness will pass and [25:35] our long-awaited King of Kings and Lord [25:37] of Lords will return and make his final [25:39] conquest. The book of Revelation isn't [25:42] just the [music] unveiling of future [25:44] events. It's the unveiling of a person, [25:47] Jesus Christ. And in Final Conquest, [25:51] [music] my exclusive commentary on [25:52] Revelation, you'll discover the great [25:55] hope we have [music] in the triumphant [25:57] return of our Lord Jesus Christ. [26:01] Request your copy of Final Conquest when [26:03] you give a generous gift to support the [26:05] ministry of Pathway to Victory or when [26:07] you become a Pathway partner. [26:29] >> And these line up exactly [music] with [26:32] the seven sealed judgments we see in [26:34] Revelation [26:36] 6. In light of current events and with [26:39] the return of Christ so clearly on the [26:41] horizon, sharing the gospel through [26:43] Pathway to Victory has never been more [26:45] important or more urgent. So, thank you [26:48] for supporting Pathway to Victory as [26:50] together we pierce the darkness [music] [26:52] of our day with the light of God's word. [26:58] Today, [music] we've been reminded that [27:00] God always keeps his word and that a [27:03] coming kingdom awaits everyone who [27:05] trusts in Jesus Christ. That's a [27:08] glorious future to look [music] forward [27:10] to. But there is another future and it [27:13] belongs to those who reject Jesus [27:15] [music] Christ. Next time, we'll take a [27:17] sobering look at the ultimate destiny of [27:20] all who die apart from faith in Christ. [27:22] [music] [27:23] Stay tuned for a preview of what's [27:24] coming up next in our series, Final [27:27] [music] Conquest. [27:30] The mistake we make though is assuming [27:31] [music] [27:32] that God's justice is just as arbitrary [27:36] as our [music] justice system is. The [27:40] Bible tells us there is a final judgment [27:43] coming for all those who don't know [27:46] Christ without any promise of pardon or [27:50] parole. Set your DVR and join us next [27:53] time for the message Final Judgment here [27:56] on Pathway to Victory.
