Welcome again [02:44] to Pathway [music] to Victory. Ever [02:46] since the fall of man, Satan has enjoyed [02:49] a measure of power and [music] dominion [02:50] over the earth, spreading evil and chaos [02:53] wherever possible. But the Bible teaches [02:56] that during the [music] last days, Satan [02:58] will be vanquished and Christ will [03:00] return to establish his kingdom on [03:02] earth. In [music] fact, more than 1,800 [03:05] prophecies in the Old Testament promise [03:08] that future kingdom. My message is [03:10] titled The Coming Kingdom [music] on [03:12] today's edition of Pathway to Victory. [03:20] Does God still invade our ordinary [03:22] [music] lives with the miraculous? I'm [03:25] convinced he still does. In my book, [03:27] [music] Divine Invasions, I walk through [03:29] what the Bible actually teaches about [03:31] miracles. I wrote this book because I [03:34] believe God hasn't stopped doing the [03:36] impossible. And I want [music] you to [03:38] experience it in your own life starting [03:41] today. Get your copy of Divine Invasions [03:44] and [music] discover the miracle working [03:46] power of our almighty God. [03:52] [music] [03:59] Get out your pen and paper. I've got [04:00] four questions for you. Multiplechoice. [04:04] No cheating, please. Everyone with their [04:07] eyes on their own paper. [04:09] These are this is a pop quiz about Bible [04:12] prophecy. Question number one. The [04:15] kingdom of God is A spiritual kingdom, [04:20] B a physical kingdom, C all of the [04:24] above, or D none of the above. Question [04:28] number two. God's promise to Israel of a [04:31] land that would be theirs forever was a [04:35] conditional, [04:37] b unconditional, [04:39] c transferred in a spiritual sense to [04:43] the church. Question number three. [04:46] Satan's power over the earth was a [04:50] defeated at the cross. B defeated at the [04:54] resurrection. [04:56] C continues today. [05:01] Final question. [05:03] Christians will receive their new bodies [05:06] A at the rapture, [05:09] B at the second coming, or C from their [05:13] plastic surgeon. [05:17] Your answer to those questions actually [05:20] reveal what you believe about the topic [05:23] we're going to look at today in [05:25] Revelation chapter 20. And that is the [05:28] coming kingdom of God we call the [05:31] millennium. If you have your Bibles, [05:33] turn to Revelation [05:35] 20 as we look at that coming kingdom of [05:39] God. Now remember last time we finished [05:42] Revelation 19, the battle of Armageddon, [05:45] that time at the end of the tribulation [05:48] when the world forces will gather [05:50] together on the plane of Megiddo, uh [05:52] presumably to defeat the antichrist, the [05:56] world leader. But suddenly in the midst [05:58] of that battle, they will look up. They [06:00] will see the skies open and the Lord [06:03] Jesus Christ and those of us who belong [06:05] with him will return to earth to defeat [06:09] the Antichrist and those who follow [06:12] after him. And the reason we come back [06:15] with Christ is to establish that long [06:18] awaited kingdom of God on earth we call [06:21] the millennium. By the way, the word [06:23] millennium doesn't appear anywhere in [06:25] the Bible, but don't let that shake you [06:27] up. Neither does the word trinity. But [06:30] the concept is still valid for both. [06:33] Millennium, it comes from two Latin [06:35] words. Millie, which means a thousand [06:38] anom years. We're referring to the [06:41] thousand-year reign of Christ that is [06:44] promised throughout scripture and [06:45] especially in our passage today, [06:48] Revelation chapter 20. Now, first of [06:50] all, let's look before we get into the [06:52] text at the millennium in perspective. [06:54] If you see on your chart there on your [06:56] outline that famous uh Bible prophecy [07:00] chart I've shown you before, right now [07:02] we are living in this period of time [07:04] called the church age. It's the time [07:06] that God has temporarily set aside his [07:10] dealings with Israel and has allowed [07:12] non-Jews, people like you and me, to [07:15] become a part of the kingdom of God. But [07:18] that setting aside of Israel is only [07:20] temporary. uh Romans 11:es 2-5 says God [07:25] will not forsake his people and that God [07:28] will ultimately keep his promise to [07:30] Israel. The end of the church age is the [07:33] rapture of the church. When every last [07:36] Gentile who is going to be saved during [07:38] that time has been saved, when the [07:40] fullness of the Gentiles has come in, [07:43] there will be a rapture in which the [07:44] church will be caught up to meet the [07:47] Lord in the air. And that is told in 1 [07:50] Thessalonians 4:13-18. [07:53] And after the church has been raptured, [07:55] then will begin the great tribulation, [07:58] God's final seven years of earth's [08:01] history in which God will give Israel a [08:04] final chance to repent. And by the way, [08:07] uh many Jews will be saved during the [08:09] great tribulation. There will be many [08:12] Gentiles saved as well, but they will [08:14] pay a great price. Many will be martyed. [08:17] The end of the tribulation is what I [08:18] mentioned, the battle of Armageddon. [08:20] That final battle against uh the world [08:23] dictator, the ar antichrist that will be [08:26] climaxed with the second coming of [08:28] Christ. Revelation 19:11-2. [08:32] And that begins the period of Christ's [08:35] literal reign on earth for a thousand [08:37] years, the millennium that we'll talk [08:39] about in a moment. There is a final [08:41] rebellion at the end of the millennium. [08:44] And that rebellion is followed by the [08:46] final judgment of all unbelievers, the [08:48] great white throne judgment that we'll [08:50] be looking at next week in Revelation 20 [08:53] 11-15. [08:55] And after that judgment, the present [08:57] heavens and earth are destroyed and God [08:59] brings in a new heaven and a new earth. [09:03] Now, that's a year's worth of revelation [09:05] in five minutes. You probably wondered [09:06] why I couldn't do it that quickly [09:08] before, but that is it. Now, we've come [09:11] today to Revelation 20, the millennium, [09:15] God's fulfillment of his promise to [09:18] Israel. You know, often we chide [09:22] the Jewish people, the Israelites, for [09:25] missing the coming of the Lord Jesus [09:27] Christ. We say they made a mistake. [09:31] Instead of looking for a ruling king, [09:34] they should have looked for a suffering [09:36] savior. Instead of looking for a literal [09:39] kingdom, they should have been looking [09:41] for a spiritual kingdom. And yet, that's [09:44] not true. They were absolutely justified [09:47] in believing that when Messiah came, he [09:50] would come as a king and that he would [09:52] establish a literal physical kingdom on [09:54] the earth. Because there are 1,800 [09:57] prophecies in the Old Testament that [09:58] promise such a thing. The problem with [10:01] the Jewish people at that time was they [10:04] didn't understand there would be two [10:05] comingings of the Messiah. The first [10:07] time he would come as that suffering [10:10] savior to be a ransom for the sins of [10:12] the entire world. But the second time he [10:16] comes, the next time he comes will be [10:18] when he comes as king of kings and lord [10:21] of lords and he will set up a literal [10:25] kingdom on earth. Let me just point out [10:27] a few passages from the Old Testament [10:29] that promised that kind of literal [10:32] kingdom on earth. First of all, 2 Samuel [10:35] 7:es 12-13. We often call these verses [10:40] the Davidic covenant. God's promise to [10:42] David. He says in verse 12, "When your [10:45] days are complete and you lie down with [10:48] your fathers, I will raise up your [10:50] descendant after you, the Lord Jesus [10:53] Christ, who will come forth from you, [10:56] and I will establish his kingdom, and he [10:58] will build a house for my name, and I [11:01] will establish the throne of his kingdom [11:03] for how long? Forever." That's the [11:06] promise of a coming kingdom. Or Psalm [11:09] 89:es 30-37. [11:12] people who say, "Well, Israel forfeited [11:15] that kingdom when they rejected Christ." [11:17] Look at this. If his sons, talking about [11:20] David, if his sons forsake my law and do [11:24] not walk in my judgments, if they [11:26] violate my statutes and do not keep my [11:28] commandments, then I will punish their [11:31] transgression with a rod and their [11:33] iniquity with stripes. [11:36] I'm going to get right back to the [11:37] message, but first a quick word. If [11:40] you're streaming Pathway to Victory on [11:42] YouTube today, thank you. [12:24] You know, people who criticize those of [12:26] us who believe that God's going to [12:28] fulfill his promise to Israel, they say, [12:30] "Wait a minute. Israel has rebelled [12:32] against God. Are you telling me that [12:35] they're not going to suffer for their [12:36] disobedience to God? No, we're not [12:39] saying that at all. God said to Israel, [12:41] if you sin, you're going to experience [12:43] the consequences of your sin. But look [12:46] at verse 33. But even in that case, I [12:50] will not break off my loving kindness [12:53] from him, nor deal falsely in my [12:56] faithfulness. My covenant I will not [12:58] violate, nor will I alter the utterance [13:02] of my lips. Once I have sworn by my [13:04] holiness, I will not lie to David. His [13:08] descendant shall endure how long? [13:10] Forever. And his throne is the sun [13:13] before me. It shall be established how [13:16] long? Forever. Like the moon and the [13:19] witness in the sky is faithful. Listen [13:22] to me. in Genesis 12 and later ratified [13:26] in Genesis 15. God made an unconditional [13:30] covenant with Israel. It's not to [13:34] national Israel. Paul said it over and [13:37] over again. Jesus said it. Being a [13:40] physical descendant of Abraham isn't [13:42] enough. You have to be a physical [13:44] descendant of Abraham and a spiritual [13:47] descendant. You have to believe. It is [13:50] to believing Israel that God said, "I'm [13:53] going to keep the promise I made to [13:54] Abraham of a land, a seed, and a [13:57] blessing that will belong to my people [14:00] forever." That's the covenant that you [14:02] have here in Psalm 89. And listen, if [14:06] God breaks his covenant with Israel, [14:09] what's to keep him from breaking the [14:11] covenant he's made with you and with me? [14:14] That I will remember your sin no more? [14:16] As far as the east is from the west, so [14:18] far I will remove your transgression [14:20] from you. What if you get to heaven and [14:23] God says to you, you know, I told you [14:25] you could be forgiven forever and ever, [14:27] but I've changed my mind and I'm going [14:29] to dredge up every wrong thing you've [14:31] done and judge you accordingly. If God [14:34] breaks his covenant with Israel, he can [14:36] break his covenant with you. But thank [14:38] God, he doesn't do that. He keeps his [14:41] word. And that's why it makes a [14:43] difference to us whether or not God [14:45] rejects his people. Look at Isaiah 9:6 [14:48] and 7. For a child will be born to us. A [14:52] son will be given to us and the [14:53] government will rest on his shoulders [14:56] and his name shall be called wonderful [14:59] counselor, mighty God, eternal father, [15:01] prince of peace. And there will be no [15:04] end to his increase of his government or [15:07] peace on the throne of David and over [15:10] his kingdom to establishment and to hold [15:12] it with justice and righteousness from [15:15] then on and forever more. Or Isaiah [15:18] 11:46 and 9. But with righteousness he [15:22] will judge the poor and decide with [15:24] fairness for the afflicted of the earth. [15:26] And he will strike the earth with the [15:28] rod of his mouth and with the breath of [15:30] his lips. and he will slay the wicked. [15:33] You know, there is such an emphasis [15:35] today on the desire for justice and [15:39] social justice. [15:42] Do you know where that comes from? It [15:44] comes from the fact that we are all [15:46] created in the image of God. And even [15:49] after the fall, even unbelievers retain [15:53] a remnant of that image of God inside of [15:56] them. [15:57] The reason we long for justice is [16:00] because we are created by a God who is a [16:02] God of justice. And we have that [16:05] longing. The only problem is we can't [16:08] bring that justice ourselves. We ought [16:10] to strive for it, but we can't bring it [16:12] ourselves. God has to bring it. And he [16:14] will satisfy that desire we have [16:17] ultimately when Christ comes and rules [16:20] in justice. Look at verse six. and the [16:22] wolf will dwell with the lamb and the [16:25] leopard will lie down with the young [16:27] goat and the calf and the young lion and [16:29] the fatling together and a little boy [16:31] will lead them and they shall not hurt [16:33] or destroy in my holy mountain for the [16:35] earth will be full of the knowledge of [16:37] the Lord as the waters cover the sea. We [16:40] sang that so the lion and the lamb it [16:42] comes from this passage that is the [16:45] coming kingdom of God. Remember in Acts [16:48] chapter one [clears throat] when Jesus [16:50] was getting ready to uh ascend into [16:53] heaven uh after he received his [16:56] resurrected body and he was standing on [16:58] the Mount of Olives and as he was about [17:00] to depart his disciples said Lord are [17:04] you at this time going to restore the [17:06] kingdom to Israel they were in effect [17:09] saying Lord before you leave haven't you [17:12] forgotten something haven't you [17:14] forgotten the whole reason you came was [17:16] to establish your kingdom on earth. [17:19] Isn't this the time to do it? Now, if [17:22] the disciples had mis mistakenly [17:25] believed in a literal kingdom, if they [17:27] were wrong, that would have been a time [17:29] for Jesus to have clarified that for [17:31] them. He could have says, "A kingdom?" [17:34] Boys, you've got it all wrong these last [17:36] three years. I'm not here to establish a [17:39] real kingdom, just a spiritual kingdom. [17:43] That's all I came to do. But he didn't [17:45] say that, did he? In verse 7 of Acts 1, [17:48] he said, "It is not for you to know the [17:50] time or the epics when I shall do these [17:53] things. That is given to the father [17:55] alone." He has fixed it by his own [17:58] authority. In other words, he was saying [18:00] it's coming, but it's coming according [18:03] to God's timetable and not to yours. [18:05] There is a kingdom coming and it will be [18:09] the fulfillment of God's eternal promise [18:12] to Israel and Israel's descendants. Now, [18:15] that's what the millennium is. It is [18:18] God's kingdom on earth, the fulfillment [18:21] of the Old Testament prophecies. Now, [18:23] throughout history, there have been [18:24] three prevalent views about the [18:27] millennium. You may have heard these [18:29] terms before. Let me explain them to [18:30] you. The first view is the amillennial [18:34] position of the kingdom. Amillennial [18:38] in Greek that word a letter a is an [18:42] alpha primitive. Anytime a appears [18:45] before the word it negates it. It means [18:47] no. The a millennial position means no [18:52] millennium. And there are many [18:54] Christians who believe that. Many good [18:56] Christians. Uh many of those who [18:59] subscribe to reformed theology believe [19:02] in the a millennial position that there [19:05] is no literal kingdom of heaven on earth [19:08] for a thousand years. And what they say [19:11] is this. They say that when Israel [19:14] rejected Christ, Israel forfeited all of [19:19] those promises. And the promises that [19:22] God made to Israel were transferred to [19:25] the church of Jesus Christ. And instead [19:27] of being a literal fulfillment, there [19:30] will be a spiritual fulfillment. And the [19:33] land that was promised to Israel, that [19:35] no longer belongs to Israel. Instead, [19:37] that's been transferred to the church. [19:39] And the land has been uh spiritualized [19:42] to be heaven. So when we sing we're [19:44] marching to Zion, we're not talking [19:47] about Jerusalem. We're talking about to [19:49] the heavenly Zion. So that's the [19:52] amillennial position. And there's not [19:54] going to be any literal binding of Satan [19:56] for a thousand years. That's happening [19:58] in your heart right now is Satan has no [20:01] power over you. Now, that's the [20:04] amillennial position. The problem and [20:06] there are many of them with that [20:07] position is what do you say about [20:10] Genesis 15 in which God ratified that [20:13] covenant with Abraham while he was [20:14] asleep and was saying it was all [20:17] dependent upon me? God said, not upon [20:20] Israel. Or what do you do with Psalm 89? [20:23] You know, I'm going to keep this promise [20:24] forever just as the sun and the moon are [20:27] in the star heavens. I'm going to keep [20:30] my promise with Israel. And can anybody [20:33] really say that Satan in any sense of [20:35] the word is bound right now? Well, he's [20:39] running rampant throughout this world. [20:40] He's not been bound. He's not powerless [20:43] right now. The Bible says he's the [20:45] prince of the power of the air. He is [20:46] the god of this age. But that is the [20:49] amillennial position. The second view of [20:52] the millennium is what is called the [20:54] postmillennial view. Post means after. [20:59] When does Christ come? He comes after [21:02] the millennium. This is the idea that [21:06] the world is going to get better and [21:08] better and better and finally it will be [21:10] in such wonderful shape that Christ [21:13] says, "I can't stay in heaven any [21:14] longer. I've got to come to this perfect [21:16] world that man has created and rule over [21:19] man. That's the postmillennial position. [21:21] Now the third view is the premillennial [21:24] view. That's the view I subscribe to and [21:27] many of you do. Pre means before and [21:30] that is we believe that Christ must come [21:32] before the millennium. Only he will be [21:35] able to institute his reign here on [21:38] earth. Now with that introduction, we're [21:42] ready to get into the text. We're only [21:44] going to look at the first six verses [21:46] about the beginning of the millennium. [21:48] And it starts with the binding of Satan. [21:50] Look at chapter 20 verse one. Then John [21:53] says, "I saw an angel coming down from [21:56] heaven holding the key of the abyss and [21:59] a great chain in his hand." What is the [22:02] abyss? Abyssas refers to a bottomless [22:06] pit. [22:08] This is a place we've looked at before [22:10] in scripture. It is a place of torment [22:16] for a certain group of demons, angels [22:20] who had fallen and rebelled against God [22:22] in a specific way. It's referred to in [22:25] second Peter 2:4 and in Jude verse 6. I [22:29] think uh these are the uh demons who [22:34] cohabitated with the daughters of men in [22:37] Genesis 6. And because of that [22:39] particular sin, they were immediately [22:42] judged and sent to this place of [22:44] confinement called the abyss or the [22:47] bottomless pit. You remember in Luke [22:50] 8:31 when the garrison demoniac, the man [22:53] filled with demons was uh exercised by [22:57] Jesus. And when those demons left the [22:59] man, they begged Jesus, "Lord, do not [23:02] throw us into the abyss." Even they [23:05] didn't want to go to that place. It was [23:07] so horrible. We saw this place in [23:10] Revelation 9:es 1 and two, the fifth [23:13] trumpet judgment when a fallen angel was [23:16] allowed to release a group of demonic uh [23:19] scorpions to spread all over the earth. [23:23] But now we have a heavenly angel who has [23:26] been given a key and a chain. For what [23:30] purpose? Look at verse two. And this [23:33] angel laid hold of the dragon, the [23:37] serpent of old, who is the devil and [23:40] Satan, and he bound him for a thousand [23:43] years. Remember last time in chapter 19, [23:46] we saw that at the battle of Armageddon, [23:48] uh the antichrist and the false prophet [23:51] are seized by an angel and they are cast [23:54] into the lake of fire. But what about [23:56] the third part of that satanic trinity, [23:59] Satan himself? Well, he has a special [24:01] destiny. That is this angel takes him [24:04] and bounds him for a thousand years. In [24:06] other words, to put him into this place [24:09] called the abyss, the bottomless pit. I [24:12] want you to notice the four names that [24:14] are used to describe Satan. He's called [24:16] a dragon. That refers to his beastly [24:19] character. We saw it in Revelation 12:3. [24:22] A red dragon ready to devour Christ and [24:26] the church. Uh, [24:29] Satan doesn't usually appear that way as [24:32] a dragon. If people saw him as he really [24:35] is, they would run as far and as fast [24:37] from him as they could. He's called the [24:40] dragon. He's called the serpent, [24:42] referring to his subtle nature. [24:45] Remember, when the serpent appeared to [24:46] Eve, it wasn't as a dragon. She wouldn't [24:49] have been compelled to follow him. He [24:51] appeared as a beautiful creature. And uh [24:54] many times Satan appears that way to us. [24:57] Um Paul says he can appear as an angel [24:59] of light. Thirdly, he's called the [25:02] devil. Diabolos in Greek. It means [25:05] slanderer. One of the things Satan does [25:08] is he accuses God's people day and night [25:12] before the throne of God according to [25:14] Revelation 12:10. But this word diabolos [25:18] also refers to his diabolical [25:21] nature. In John 8:44, Jesus called him a [25:24] murderer from the beginning. You know, [25:27] you read in the media these horrible [25:30] accounts of men who kidnap children or [25:34] kidnap other women and do horrible [25:37] things to them, torture and things that [25:39] can't even be described. And you wonder [25:42] where does that come from? It comes from [25:45] Satan himself, the diabolical nature of [25:48] Satan, Diabolos. And then finally he [25:52] refers to him as Satan himself. The word [25:55] Satan means adversary, enemy. He is the [25:59] enemy of Jesus and he is the enemy of [26:01] everyone who would follow Jesus. Whether [26:04] you know it or not, Satan has you in his [26:08] crosshairs. He's got a big X on your [26:11] back [music] and he's looking to take [26:13] you out any way he can to destroy you [26:16] and everything that is important to you. [26:24] There's much more for us to learn about [26:25] that millennial kingdom that Jesus will [26:28] establish on earth one day. Your gift keeps this ministry [26:55] [music] reaching more and more people [26:57] with the hopeful message of Jesus Christ [26:59] [music] and his soon return. Thank you [27:02] for standing with us. Now, please [27:05] [music] stay right there. I'll be back [27:06] with more in just a moment. Our world is [27:10] growing darker by the day. But the book [27:12] of Revelation teaches that one day soon [27:14] the darkness will pass and our [27:17] long-awaited King of Kings and Lord of [27:19] Lords will return and make his final [27:21] conquest. The book of Revelation isn't [27:24] just the unveiling of future events. [27:27] It's the unveiling [music] of a person, [27:29] Jesus Christ. And in Final Conquest, my [27:33] [music] exclusive commentary on [27:34] Revelation, you'll discover the great [27:37] hope we have in [music] the triumphant [27:39] return of our Lord Jesus Christ. [27:43] Request your copy of Final Conquest when [27:45] you give a generous gift to support the [27:47] ministry of Pathway to Victory or when [27:49] you become a Pathway Partner. [28:11] >> And these line up exactly with the seven [28:14] sealed judgments we see in Revelation [28:17] chap 6. In light of current events and [28:21] with the return of Christ so clearly on [28:23] the horizon, sharing the gospel through [28:25] Pathway to Victory has never been [28:26] [music] more important or more urgent. [28:29] So, thank you for supporting Pathway to [28:31] Victory as together we pierce the [28:33] darkness of our day with the light of [28:35] God's word. [28:39] The Jewish people had every reason to [28:41] expect a Messiah who would establish a [28:44] literal kingdom on earth. After all, [28:47] more than 1,800 Old Testament [music] [28:49] prophecies promised exactly that. What [28:53] they missed is the timing. And next [28:55] time, I'll walk through the competing [28:57] views on the millennium and [music] make [28:59] the case for how I read and understand [29:02] Revelation chapter 20. Stay tuned [29:04] [music] for a preview of what's coming [29:06] up next in our series, Final Conquest. [29:11] When we die, [29:13] we do not cease to exist. [29:16] Death is not the end [29:19] for anyone, Christian or non-Christian. [29:23] Instead, physical death is just the [29:26] doorway through which we enter [music] [29:27] into eternity. [29:30] An eternity of God's blessing or an [29:33] eternity of God's judgment. Set your DVR [29:37] and join us next time for part two of [29:39] the message, The Coming Kingdom, here on [29:41] Pathway to Victory.
