[00:00]
Thomas, uh, House Speaker Mike Johnson.
[00:03]
Good morning, sir.
[00:05]
>> Hey, Aaron and, uh, Thomas. Great to
[00:07]
hear both both your voices this morning.
[00:10]
>> We're going to talk about, uh, September
[00:11]
11th in just a minute, but I want to
[00:13]
talk about, um, when's my check in the
[00:15]
mail, the $5,000 check the president
[00:17]
promised me the other night.
[00:20]
Well, um, let me just say, look, the the
[00:23]
president and and I can tell you every
[00:25]
Republican in Congress, we're the only
[00:27]
party in making life more affordable for
[00:29]
American citizens. I talked about that
[00:30]
in my speech at the convention
[00:32]
yesterday. Um, this is just another
[00:35]
idea, proposal the president has to
[00:37]
continue on that theme. it it's a topic
[00:39]
I'm just going to tell you Congress will
[00:41]
obviously debate and discuss this in the
[00:42]
weeks and months ahead but we also have
[00:45]
to stay mindful of the cost in our
[00:46]
country's fiscal uh you know situation
[00:48]
and so that's all part of the discussion
[00:51]
and and uh I talked to the president
[00:52]
about it uh after his speech when he uh
[00:55]
revealed the big idea and uh again
[00:58]
yesterday and um we'll see we'll see uh
[01:00]
if it has legs in Congress.
[01:02]
>> He promised us a doge check and a tariff
[01:04]
check. I'm still waiting on those. Can
[01:06]
we really believe that we're going to
[01:07]
get a check? Do you really believe
[01:08]
that's going to happen?
[01:10]
>> Well, I tell you what the president has
[01:12]
done is he's put more money in every
[01:14]
American's pockets. I mean, you know, we
[01:16]
gave the largest tax cut in US history
[01:19]
and cut tax on tips and overtime, social
[01:21]
security, and all the rest. And in
[01:22]
Louisiana, the average tax cut is
[01:25]
$2,915.
[01:27]
That's that's $243 a month for the just
[01:29]
the average Louisian. And and by the
[01:31]
way, take-home pays increase $6,600 to
[01:34]
$9,200. That's that's the state average
[01:37]
for take-home pay just because of our
[01:38]
policy. So, he is putting more money in
[01:41]
Americans checks and and you're having
[01:42]
to send less to Uncle Sam in Washington.
[01:45]
But the more we do, you know, we doubled
[01:46]
the job tax credit. We uh gave an
[01:49]
enhanced tax credit for seniors. We
[01:50]
we're doing that every single day in our
[01:52]
policies. And these are just new ideas
[01:53]
to do more of the same. Do you
[01:55]
anticipate that um the Democrats are
[01:58]
going to rail him, which I've seen some
[02:00]
of it already, that he's buying votes,
[02:03]
uh that this is an attempt to buy votes?
[02:05]
How do you answer that?
[02:07]
>> Well, it's kind of silly for Democrats
[02:09]
to say that when they're the ones that
[02:10]
orchestrated the COVID subsidies and
[02:13]
payouts. This is not an unprecedented
[02:15]
thing. Americans have gotten checks
[02:16]
before for different reasons. He's not
[02:18]
buying votes because his proposal on its
[02:21]
face obviously says every American would
[02:23]
get a check regardless of how you vote.
[02:25]
So, um that that's that's how he
[02:27]
presented it. That's what he means by
[02:28]
that. He's not this is not a vote buying
[02:31]
uh uh you know proposal. He he's trying
[02:33]
to say that America is back. Uh and and
[02:36]
in his mind, because the president is a
[02:38]
business guy, right? He thinks of it in
[02:39]
terms of a business. And if if your your
[02:41]
your company or corporation is is has
[02:44]
big earnings, you get a dividend check.
[02:46]
In his mind, that's how this works. So
[02:48]
that's what he's talking about.
[02:50]
>> Speaker Mike Johnson. I almost called
[02:51]
you Mike. I'm so sorry. You're so You're
[02:54]
so important now.
[02:54]
>> She called you Mikey earlier, so we're
[02:56]
going to make sure that she goes with
[02:57]
something more official.
[02:58]
>> He he know he knows I've called him
[03:00]
Mikey before. Um he's my kick my
[03:03]
kickball captain. But anyway,
[03:06]
I I have to ask you a question with
[03:08]
regard to um I'll give you my 5,000
[03:11]
back. Pay down the debt. Speaker
[03:14]
Johnson. We owe $40 trillion.
[03:18]
I you you used to tell me all the time,
[03:20]
we have to take care of this debt. We
[03:22]
have to take care of this debt. We got
[03:23]
to we got to at some point do that.
[03:26]
>> No, we do. And I say it and I do it,
[03:28]
Erin. And what what the media doesn't uh
[03:31]
tell everybody, and I I mentioned this
[03:33]
in my speech yesterday at the convention
[03:34]
as well. Do you know that we cut $1.6
[03:37]
trillion just in the big beautiful bill
[03:40]
alone in July of last year? $1.6 6
[03:42]
trillion in wasteful government
[03:45]
spending. And ours is the team that goes
[03:47]
in every day to carve that up. Now,
[03:49]
here's the real problem, of course, that
[03:51]
76% of federal spending is on autopilot.
[03:54]
It's it's mandatory spending. And so, we
[03:56]
need bipartisan solutions to look at
[03:59]
that problem and and uh and address it
[04:02]
with program integrity uh changes and
[04:04]
provisions and revisions. And we have
[04:06]
ideas to do that going forward. But it's
[04:08]
a a step-by-step process. We didn't get
[04:09]
in this situation overnight. Uh it takes
[04:12]
a while to turn an aircraft carrier
[04:14]
which is the ship of state and we're
[04:15]
doing that. I mean I've got my hand
[04:17]
turning that wheel as hard as it'll go
[04:19]
but it doesn't happen overnight. So it's
[04:21]
a gradual process. We're working on
[04:22]
steps to fiscal sanity as I call it. So
[04:25]
just in this Congress by way of example
[04:27]
okay we did recisions bills which is for
[04:29]
sending wasteful spending about 10 to 12
[04:31]
billion in that category. We did the
[04:33]
reconciliation bills which is 1.6
[04:35]
trillion in cuts and more on the way. We
[04:37]
we also got back to the regular
[04:39]
appropriations process. Instead of doing
[04:41]
Christmas omnibus crazy spending bills
[04:43]
at the end of the year, I forced the
[04:45]
muscle memory back to Congress for the
[04:46]
first time in almost two decades to do
[04:49]
individual 12 individual appropriations
[04:51]
bills to spend uh the taxpayers money as
[04:53]
better stewards. So there's more of this
[04:55]
on the way, more to go, but we got to
[04:56]
keep this this trend going in the right
[04:58]
direction.
[04:58]
>> All with a fourperson majority. We
[05:00]
appreciate the work you're doing, Mike,
[05:02]
and uh really appreciate your your
[05:04]
leadership on on the House side. Um it's
[05:07]
it's tremendous. As we shift gears a
[05:10]
little bit, today is 911. Uh can you
[05:12]
tell us a little bit about where you
[05:14]
were on 911, what you recall 25 years
[05:17]
ago, uh and how our world has shifted
[05:20]
since that time?
[05:22]
>> Yeah, thanks Thomas. Uh it is a a somber
[05:25]
day. I'm sitting in my motorcade uh
[05:27]
right behind the the uh the Boer
[05:30]
municipal complex. I'm going to do the
[05:31]
911 remembrance ceremony here in about
[05:33]
15 10 15 minutes. But uh 25 years ago, I
[05:36]
mean, we obviously we witnessed the most
[05:38]
devastating deadly attack ever carried
[05:40]
out on American soil. And all of us, of
[05:42]
course, uh remember that are old enough
[05:44]
remember that day vividly. I was in my
[05:46]
my in in Louisiana working in my law
[05:48]
office and I heard a commotion down the
[05:50]
hall and I stepped into the reception
[05:52]
area of our firm and I saw the entire
[05:54]
legal staff huddled around our lobby's
[05:56]
little television there and they were
[05:57]
watching the the stunning morning news
[05:59]
coverage of that first plane crash, the
[06:00]
World Trade Center. And and of course,
[06:02]
no one everybody was trying to make
[06:04]
sense of what it meant. And then right
[06:05]
before our eyes, the second plane hit.
[06:07]
And we suddenly knew America was under
[06:10]
attack. Nothing's ever been the same
[06:11]
since. And we couldn't know in that
[06:12]
moment, of course, what would transpire
[06:14]
in the days to come. But we knew that
[06:16]
our country and the world had somehow
[06:17]
changed forever. And u I tell you what
[06:20]
though, you know, for America, the
[06:21]
darkness in 9/11 revealed the light of
[06:23]
unity. And that's what we celebrate on
[06:25]
this day. how people came together,
[06:27]
neighbors stood with neighbors, and we
[06:28]
had brave service members who answered
[06:31]
the call of duty, and we're still
[06:32]
dealing with the aftermath of that
[06:34]
today.
[06:34]
>> Could Could it happen again? Could this
[06:36]
happen again?
[06:38]
>> Well, I tell you what, by God's grace,
[06:40]
it hasn't. And that's because we took
[06:41]
very seriously our national security. We
[06:44]
tightened up the intelligence agencies
[06:46]
and how they coordinate, communicate
[06:47]
together. I mean, it's been a remarkable
[06:50]
thing that we've not had a large-scale
[06:51]
attack again. And we have to be vigilant
[06:54]
every day. That's why our servicemen and
[06:56]
women and those in our intelligence
[06:57]
agencies and everybody in the in that
[06:59]
whole apparatus who protect us have to
[07:02]
be properly funded and supported by the
[07:04]
people. And I look I not to tie this
[07:06]
into politics but you really have two
[07:08]
different visions for that right now.
[07:09]
And the the team that I lead is is in
[07:12]
favor of national security and and
[07:14]
vigorous funding of those defense
[07:15]
efforts. And the other team, as you
[07:17]
said, their proposals, the Democrat
[07:19]
party, the DSA, they want to defund the
[07:22]
Pentagon. They want to defund the
[07:23]
Department of War. It's madness and
[07:25]
we've got to make sure we have steady
[07:26]
hands at the wheel.
[07:27]
>> No doubt. No doubt. Mike, one of the
[07:29]
things that that Aaron and I talked
[07:30]
about earlier is the remarkable bravery
[07:33]
of of so many uh men and women that ran
[07:36]
into burning towers. You obviously have
[07:39]
personal experience with with your
[07:41]
father being a firefighter who um was
[07:43]
was injured on the job. Can you talk
[07:46]
about that bravery and and how we
[07:48]
continue to see it in so many uh
[07:50]
remarkable individuals throughout our
[07:52]
country?
[07:53]
>> Well, yeah, it's so important to to talk
[07:55]
about that and focus on it today. I
[07:57]
mean, we we're a people who serve our
[07:59]
nation with duty calls and just so many
[08:02]
did that bravely after the tragedy of
[08:04]
9/11, enlisting in the military and
[08:06]
serving in so many ways, first
[08:07]
responders, of course, thousands of
[08:09]
Louisiana's own sons and daughters have
[08:11]
done that. Um, in fact, Thomas, later
[08:13]
today, I'll have a chance to honor two
[08:15]
brave Louisianans who are Navy Seals who
[08:17]
gave their lives in the ensuing war on
[08:19]
terror. Jonas Kelsall and Robert Ree.
[08:22]
Just from here, I'm going to their
[08:24]
moderate kettle high to do a little
[08:26]
service in their honor. We just look, we
[08:28]
can never forget these heroes and the
[08:30]
tens of thousands who made the ultimate
[08:32]
sacrifice in the years that have
[08:33]
followed. We're losing them every day to
[08:35]
cancer from the dust at the at the at
[08:38]
ground zero and all the rest. is just an
[08:40]
unspeakable tragedy. But we honor them
[08:42]
today and we do that by working to
[08:44]
maintain America's greatness and hope
[08:46]
and opportunity. And we resolve to do
[08:49]
that with clarity and conviction in the
[08:50]
days to come. That's the best way to to
[08:52]
honor their memory.
[08:53]
>> United we stand.
[08:54]
>> One last thing before we let you go. I
[08:56]
know you're busy. Speaker Mike Johnson,
[08:58]
your message today to all the military,
[09:00]
particularly Barksdale, all the
[09:02]
Barksdale airmen and women and our all
[09:04]
our first responders. What is your
[09:06]
message to them today?
[09:08]
We're so profoundly grateful for their
[09:10]
their service and sacrifice. It cannot
[09:12]
be forgotten. It should be highlighted
[09:14]
on on on tragic remembrances like today
[09:16]
that that those who are willing to stand
[09:19]
on that that line and defend freedom and
[09:21]
defend everyone else so that we can
[09:22]
enjoy the blessings of liberty. It's
[09:24]
it's just an incredible thing. We're a
[09:26]
we're a volunteer service, you know, and
[09:29]
uh it takes a special person to do that.
[09:31]
And we're we we uphold them and we
[09:33]
respect them and we honor them,
[09:34]
especially on a day like today. House
[09:36]
Speaker Mike Johnson. I can't thank you
[09:38]
enough for your time today and for
[09:40]
carving out a piece of it. Thanks so
[09:42]
much, sir. Appreciate it.
[09:44]
>> Hey, Erin, the AM radio bill is on the
[09:46]
floor on Tuesday for a House vote.
[09:48]
Finally getting it done.
[09:49]
>> All right, I'm going to tell the bosses
[09:50]
about that. Get that passed for us.
[09:52]
>> Bosses. You got it.
[09:53]
>> You bet. Thank you, my friend. I
[09:55]
appreciate it.
[09:55]
>> Thanks, Mike.
[09:56]
>> God bless.
[09:56]
>> What a day we have had. Senator Thomas
[09:58]
Presley. Incredible.
[10:00]
>> This was awesome. Thank you so much for
[10:01]
the opportunity to to join you this
[10:03]
morning.
[10:04]
>> Yeah. Yeah. I hope you're doing
