What's the name of the [00:52] place? [00:53] >> Hamama. [00:54] >> Hamama? [00:56] >> Yeah. [00:56] >> And it doesn't exist at all today? [00:58] There's no remnant of like Is there a [01:00] city on top of it or something? [01:03] >> I don't think so. [01:04] >> Let me see. I want to Google. I'm just [01:06] curious. Hamama, Hamama [01:09] Palestine. [01:13] Hamama was a Palestinian town [01:16] depopulated during 1948 Arab-Israeli [01:19] War. [01:20] >> Yeah, 1948. [01:21] >> It was located 24 km north of Gaza. [01:24] Where is it today? [01:27] I'm just curious what the Let's see. [01:32] Hamama [01:33] Khibbat az-Zaq [01:36] I don't know where it is on the map [01:37] today. [01:38] Coordinates. Let's see what opens up in [01:40] Google Maps. [01:43] Oh. [01:44] In the northern part of the city of [01:45] Ashkelon. Okay. [01:47] So, Ashkelon. That's Okay, I see where I [01:50] see where it would have been. [01:51] Okay. [01:53] Well, nice to meet you, my sister. And [01:54] have you ever been before? Have you ever [01:56] visited? [01:57] >> No, away cuz I used to live in Jordan. [02:00] So, that's like the closest I've ever [02:02] been. [02:02] >> And do you have any family who still [02:04] lives in in Palestine, Israel? [02:06] >> I I actually do. [02:08] >> Really? [02:08] >> I have a couple relatives from my dad's [02:10] side. [02:11] I'm not sure about my mom's, but yeah. [02:14] >> Both Both sides of your family are from [02:16] the same place? They're both from [02:17] Hamama? [02:18] Like your mom and your dad? [02:19] >> is from My mom is from Ramallah. My dad [02:21] is from Hamama. [02:22] >> Wow. Ramallah's a nice city. [02:24] Or a nice place. I've been there. [02:26] Oh, that's cool. So, how do you feel [02:28] about everything that's going on? I [02:29] mean, I'm sure you guys have been [02:31] suffering the last couple years because [02:32] of what's been going on in Gaza. [02:34] >> it's been hard. Obviously, cuz of family [02:37] members and like the massive amount of [02:40] losses we've had. [02:42] >> Mhm. [02:42] >> And like yeah, and like seeing the [02:44] children over the internet like losing [02:46] their families, it's pretty [02:48] heartbreaking. [02:49] >> Have you lost anyone personally during [02:50] the war? Like do you have any family [02:51] members who perished? [02:53] >> Personally, no. Not any that I know of, [02:57] but [02:58] I Like like I said, I have a few [03:00] relatives from my dad's side. [03:02] >> And what about What are your prospects [03:03] for the future? I know it can be a [03:05] little bit grim, the idea, but like what [03:07] do you What do you feel {slash} want for [03:09] the future? [03:15] >> Um [03:15] >> You can speak honestly. [03:17] >> Whatever Whatever Allah has planned, [03:19] whatever Allah [laughter] has planned [03:20] will happen. [03:22] >> But you must have like a desire. Like [03:24] should be the What do you What do you [03:25] want? Do you want more war? Do you want [03:28] more peace? Do you see Do you want one [03:31] Palestine? Do you want one Israel? [03:35] >> For each of them to go their own [03:37] separate way. [03:38] >> Okay. So, you want our people to be [03:41] separate. [03:43] >> Yeah. [03:43] >> Okay. [03:45] >> Wait, sorry. Where are you from? [03:46] >> I'm from Yeah, like I live in Yaffa now. [03:49] My grandparents were from all over the [03:50] Middle East. I'm Jewish, and I am a Jew. [03:53] >> [snorts] [03:53] >> Uh but I live in like Tel Aviv today. [03:56] >> Mhm. [03:56] >> So, I'm Israeli. I was also raised in [03:58] America, though. [03:59] >> No. [03:59] >> Yeah. [04:00] >> Oh, yeah. [04:02] >> But yeah, so like you in your perfect [04:04] world, you would see our people like [04:06] going their separate ways, like one [04:08] Palestine, one Israel? [04:12] >> What I personally want is [04:15] for all of them to like find peace, to [04:17] like find an agreement. [04:19] >> Mhm. [04:20] >> But if that does not work, then [04:22] going their own separate way would work [04:24] instead of just this whole [04:26] situation. [04:28] >> Instead of continuously fighting. [04:31] >> Yeah. [04:31] >> Do you know I mean, you live in America, [04:33] I'm assuming. [04:34] You know any like Jews? Have you ever [04:36] encountered any Jews or met any Israeli [04:38] or Zionist [04:40] in your life? [04:41] >> In real life, no. [04:42] >> No. [04:42] >> But on like apps like these, I've talked [04:44] to many, and honestly, [04:47] I have not received any hate from any of [04:49] them whatsoever. [04:51] >> Wallah. [04:52] >> Wallah. Like you Like I meet people a [04:54] lot like you. Like for example, [04:56] >> Wow. [04:57] >> They're like They're not like hateful. [04:58] They're just like [05:00] I've met people that like support [05:02] Palestine and want the best [05:04] and stuff like that. [05:05] >> Yeah, I think I probably fall in that [05:07] circle, too, where like I have major [05:09] disagreements in how Palestinian society [05:11] runs. [05:12] But I've also spent a lot of time with [05:13] Palestinians. I live around [05:16] Palestinians. I've spent time in [05:17] Ramallah and Nablus. I've been all over [05:19] the West Bank. [05:20] Uh [05:21] and I love you guys dearly. I I don't [05:24] personally want us to go our separate [05:25] ways. I don't want us to have two [05:27] different countries. I want us all to [05:28] live together in one place peacefully. [05:31] But I also acknowledge that the things [05:33] we have to do to make that happen are [05:36] near impossible. Like yeah, we're never [05:37] going to convince our leaders to accept [05:39] what we need to do to make that happen. [05:41] Uh [05:43] so I do think sometimes I get stuck in [05:45] in bubble of like we're going to be in [05:46] this loop forever where we just keep [05:48] killing each other and fighting each [05:49] other and killing each other and [05:50] fighting each other. And it's sad [05:51] because like people like your voices and [05:53] my voices a lot of times we just get [05:54] like [05:55] muted. [05:56] >> Like they don't they don't listen to us, [05:58] yeah. [05:59] >> Yeah. [05:59] >> Get Get a person that like like like how [06:03] do I explain this? [06:04] A person from each side [06:06] that like have the same like like that [06:08] agree on the same thing. [06:11] Like if that makes sense. [06:12] >> No, no. I I get you. Like like people [06:14] who want peace. [06:16] >> Yeah. [06:16] >> The problem is in this region, habibti, [06:19] like peace gets interpreted in different [06:21] ways. Like Israelis have a very [06:24] different view of what peace is compared [06:26] to Palestinians. [06:27] For a lot of Israelis who want peace, [06:29] like peace to them is like [06:31] being a pushover. Like they want [06:33] Palestinians to take everything back [06:35] with no concessions or responsibility to [06:36] Palestinians. [06:38] >> That's peace to them? [06:39] >> To some Israel To many [06:41] many Israelis who want peace, quote [06:43] unquote, their idea of peace is like [06:46] let's just give the Palestinians [06:47] everything they want back with no like [06:50] no rights for us whatsoever. And we like [06:53] we don't stand on our own at all. Like [06:55] we just give the Palestinians everything [06:56] they want. Which is a nice thought. Like [06:58] it really is a nice thought. But in [07:00] reality like we've been fighting each [07:02] other for nearly a hundred years. [07:04] Some things on the Palestinian side are [07:06] going to have to be lost. Like some [07:08] things that Palestinians, quote unquote, [07:09] will never get back. [07:11] And Palestinians have to be okay with [07:13] that. And there's something that Jews [07:15] have to lose that will never get back [07:17] and we have to be okay with. [07:19] Like [07:20] these are just like two realities of our [07:22] sphere that neither one of our people [07:24] are really willing to accept. [07:26] Which is an issue. Like it's a really [07:28] big issue because we both see peace in a [07:29] different way. [07:31] >> Yeah. [07:32] >> Yeah, and I from what I've seen with [07:33] Palestinians like peace a lot of times, [07:35] and you can correct me if I'm wrong, [07:37] like a lot of times for Palestinians [07:38] peace means yani literally from the [07:41] river to the sea, like one [07:43] Palestine. [07:45] A lot of times it incorporates Jewish [07:47] people living under them. [07:49] Like about as a Muslim country. [07:51] >> For the like what us Palestinians see [07:54] for the media is just a bunch of like [07:56] bombing and stuff. [07:57] >> Yeah. [07:58] >> So basically, I mean, I wouldn't blame [08:00] them. If like I was in their place, I [08:02] would [08:03] think that like [08:05] like bring like there [08:09] >> [laughter] [08:11] >> I'm so sorry. I'm so bad at talking [08:13] about [08:13] >> good. It's all good. [08:15] It's all good. This isn't even politics. [08:16] This is just our land, you know? This is [08:18] a family conversation. [08:21] >> This is family affairs. [08:23] >> Yes. [08:24] >> But yeah, I know I I understand what [08:26] you're saying. Like it's just uh [08:28] I don't know if things will ever really [08:29] change here until we're able to like [08:31] prop up proper voices to make the [08:33] change, but [08:34] there's [08:35] uh [08:36] Well, I I'm curious to ask you about [08:37] this. I love talking to Palestinians [08:38] about their identity. What What do you [08:40] see yourself as? [08:41] What do you consider yourself as a [08:43] person? [08:46] >> Like personality-wise? [08:47] >> No, I mean like what is your history as [08:50] a Palestinian? Like who are you? [08:52] When you say I'm a Palestinian, [08:54] what does that mean to you? Are you an [08:55] Arab strictly or are you [08:59] part of this land or what do you feel [09:00] yourself as? [09:01] >> to lie. [09:03] I am [09:05] proud to be Palestinian, but I'm not [09:06] proud of [09:09] the actions that I've done knowing I'm [09:12] Palestinian. [09:13] But that's in the past and I have I was [09:16] willing to change and I did. [09:19] And so I see myself like now I'm like [09:23] going more towards like strictly Arab. [09:25] >> Oh. [09:27] Wow, wasn't expecting that. [09:29] >> [laughter] [09:30] >> Yeah. [09:31] >> Could you elaborate? I would love to [09:32] understand like what what what do you [09:33] mean by that? [09:35] >> Like [09:36] I'm trying to focus more on [09:39] traditions and [09:42] just [09:43] like us Arabs like we're like strict and [09:45] stuff about a lot of things like for [09:47] example behavior academic. I'm just [09:50] trying to like focus more on that. [09:51] >> Mhm. [09:52] >> Especially us Palestinians like you know [09:54] like everyone wants us to be a doctor [09:57] and stuff like that. [09:58] >> And what do [10:00] She's gone. [10:01] Sad because that was actually like a [10:03] progressive conversation [10:05] and she had to leave which is [10:07] interesting because she said that she's [10:09] had conversations with Israelis before. [10:11] I don't know maybe she had somebody on [10:12] the other line telling her who I was. I [10:13] don't know. [10:14] Anyways Habibti it was a nice [10:16] conversation. It was nice to meet you my [10:17] sister. I wish you nothing but nothing [10:19] but good. I'm sure that when I post this [10:20] video she'll be like can you take it [10:21] down? Can you take it down?
