We continue to prepare for Yom Kippur,
[00:03]
which will begin at sunset tonight, and
[00:05]
emergency teams are on heightened alert
[00:08]
for this Yom Kippur, as usual,
[00:09]
including MADA teams, and we are
[00:11]
speaking this morning with MADA
[00:13]
paramedic Meir Valder, who joins us.
[00:16]
Meir, good morning.
[00:19]
Good morning, I will try to stick to
[00:21]
one language throughout the interview.
[00:23]
At least you are not artificial
[00:25]
intelligence; if you were artificial
[00:26]
intelligence, I would be very, very
[00:28]
worried about who would take care of us
[00:30]
this Yom Kippur.
[00:31]
I am sure MADA would take care of
[00:33]
things like that too.
[00:35]
Meir, like every year at MADA, you are
[00:37]
of course preparing for Yom Kippur with
[00:40]
thousands of volunteers, right? We are
[00:42]
talking about thousands of volunteers
[00:44]
during Yom Kippur,
[00:45]
right? We are talking about over 39,000
[00:48]
volunteers, including doctors,
[00:50]
paramedics, and first responders who
[00:52]
are active all year round and
[00:54]
especially on these days all over the
[00:56]
country; some are in reinforced shifts
[00:58]
in the MADA helicopter unit, some are
[01:01]
on standby with ambulances and rescue
[01:03]
vehicles like motorcycles and
[01:05]
medicycles at their homes or in their
[01:07]
private vehicles, essentially ready for
[01:09]
any task, any call that I hope we won't
[01:11]
need to respond to.
[01:15]
I hope, I hope, Yom Kippur calls are
[01:17]
mainly divided into...
[01:21]
There are always calls, let's call it
[01:23]
routine. People who are sick, people
[01:25]
who are sick all year, are also sick on
[01:27]
this day. There are also, of course,
[01:30]
things that are more characteristic,
[01:32]
like dehydration and illnesses that
[01:34]
worsen mainly because of the fast, or
[01:36]
alternatively injuries like riding
[01:38]
bicycles in an unsafe way, collisions,
[01:40]
cardiac incidents, or traffic-related
[01:43]
incidents; things that happen because
[01:45]
the road is open, people allow
[01:47]
themselves more and make mistakes that
[01:49]
end up in a call to us.
[01:52]
Your recommendations for those fasting
[01:54]
on Yom Kippur, how to better prepare
[01:56]
for this day, especially from the
[01:57]
medical perspective as an experienced
[01:59]
professional.
[02:01]
So, great, on a personal level, of
[02:03]
course, this day requires preparation:
[02:05]
drink plenty, at least two liters per
[02:07]
person, before the fast. It is
[02:10]
important to avoid salty foods or those
[02:12]
high in caffeine. Or alcohol. Yes, it
[02:16]
is important to eat, especially in the
[02:18]
pre-fast meal, as we said, drink plenty
[02:21]
, eat all food groups: carbohydrates,
[02:23]
proteins, vegetables. Eat in a quantity
[02:26]
that will keep you full for a long time
[02:28]
. I think that on a general level, it
[02:32]
is worth paying attention, that every
[02:34]
person should really watch out for
[02:36]
themselves and for those around them.
[02:39]
In the event that a person thinks they
[02:41]
have a problem regarding the fast, they
[02:43]
should consult with a doctor or their
[02:45]
rabbi. For those riding bicycles: make
[02:47]
sure to ride safely, still according to
[02:50]
road conditions, wear pads on hands and
[02:52]
knees, wear helmets on your head. It is
[02:55]
important to remember that we are also
[02:57]
still in a sensitive period.
[03:00]
So in this context, be attentive to
[03:02]
Home Front Command guidelines, know how
[03:05]
to find the nearest protected space,
[03:07]
and essentially act in a way that we
[03:09]
can also use this day and get through
[03:11]
it safely and start a good year, just
[03:13]
as we so desire.
[03:16]
Amen. Amen. And I join you in the fact
[03:20]
that it is Yom Kippur and we think that
[03:22]
everyone respects this day and does not
[03:23]
drive on the road. So be careful and
[03:27]
warn the children to still treat the
[03:29]
road as a road, not in the literal
[03:31]
sense of "now" and I don't know what,
[03:34]
kids who decide to ride from city to
[03:36]
city. It happens. It is possible to
[03:39]
behave the same way. Because
[03:41]
unfortunately, there have been cases in
[03:43]
the past of cars driving on the road
[03:45]
that led to very difficult outcomes.
[03:47]
And these are cases that we encounter
[03:49]
and see, unfortunately, every year.
[03:52]
Vehicles are still using the road for
[03:55]
emergency trips, like ambulances or any
[03:57]
rescue vehicles. There are also other
[04:00]
people who simply take others for any
[04:02]
reason whatsoever. The danger still
[04:04]
exists, and perhaps precisely because
[04:06]
the danger is more blurred since fewer
[04:08]
people are doing it, it can appear—
[04:10]
and when it arrives, it will appear in
[04:12]
full force, so one must be attentive
[04:14]
and alert all the time.
[04:15]
Absolutely, Meir Valder, I really hope
[04:18]
you have a boring time this Yom Kippur.
[04:22]
Uh.
[04:22]
With your permission, I would first
[04:24]
like to raise one more small point.
[04:26]
Every year, for 31 years in a row,
[04:29]
there has been a tradition in Zichron
[04:31]
Ya'akov of a very, very, very large
[04:33]
blood drive that is held specifically
[04:35]
on the eve of Yom Kippur to enter the
[04:37]
new year and this holy day in a......
[04:40]
slightly better way. I want to call
[04:42]
upon anyone who can—of course,
[04:44]
someone who knows for themselves that
[04:46]
it won't interfere with their fast, or
[04:48]
alternatively, someone who chooses to
[04:49]
do another good deed before the new
[04:51]
year—it is an excellent idea to come
[04:53]
and give of your blood, literally, to
[04:55]
save at least three or four more people
[04:57]
already on the eve of the holiday. I
[04:59]
think entering this holy day with
[05:01]
another good thing we do for the
[05:03]
general public is definitely a
[05:04]
wonderful step that brings us toward a
[05:06]
much better year, hoping for a year of
[05:08]
health and joy for everyone. Amazing,
[05:11]
what a mitzvah! So now I will wish you
[05:14]
a fairly boring Yom Kippur, with no
[05:15]
calls, that it passes quietly, and that
[05:17]
we have a good and peaceful year. Meir,
[05:19]
thank you very much for speaking with
[05:21]
us.
[05:21]
Thank you very much, have a good year.
[05:23]
Signed for a good year, yeah.
