[00:00]
In the Hunger Games, the love triangle
[00:01]
isn't just an add-on. It's an essential
[00:03]
part of the theme. Gail and PETA don't
[00:05]
just represent different relationships.
[00:07]
They represent different life paths.
[00:09]
Katniss is never in love with Gail. She
[00:12]
feels affection and obligation toward
[00:13]
him because of the way they helped each
[00:15]
other survive. With PETA, it starts out
[00:17]
the same way. Katniss pretends to be in
[00:19]
love with him to survive the games. In
[00:21]
both cases, Collins is showing us the
[00:23]
way tyranny seeps into every aspect of
[00:25]
Katniss' life. But people have different
[00:28]
ways of responding to the same horrific
[00:30]
events. Ultimately, Catus is choosing
[00:32]
not just between her pregame self and
[00:34]
her postgame self, but between violence
[00:36]
that perpetuates the hatred between
[00:38]
district and capital, which is Gail and
[00:40]
his righteous anger, or between
[00:43]
persuasion and example to affect change,
[00:46]
which is Peta's special. Peta determines
[00:48]
that the capital won't change him, and
[00:50]
despite his best efforts, it doesn't.
[00:53]
But Gail is shaped by his hatred for the
[00:55]
capital from the very beginning. So like
[00:57]
all the best choices in literature,
[00:58]
Katniss's choice between Gail and Peta
[01:01]
is not just about personal preference or
[01:04]
compatibility. It's about what matters
[01:07]
most deeply to her in light of
[01:08]
everything she's discovered and
[01:10]
realized.
