Iranian ballistic missiles have demonstrated capability to penetrate Israeli defenses and strike cities, with a direct hit on Tel Aviv in March causing significant damage. Recent intelligence indicates Iran is rebuilding its missile production capacity despite Israeli and American strikes on its infrastructure. The nuclear question remains unresolved, with the IAEA unable to verify Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles estimated at 440 kg enriched to 60%.
The Jericho missile system represents Israel's strategic deterrent designed for existential threats rather than tactical operations. Foreign defense researchers classify it as part of Israel's second-strike capability, though Israel maintains official secrecy about the system. The weapon operates in a fundamentally different category from conventional military hardware.
Israel developed the Jericho 1 in the 1960s with French assistance, a 500 km range missile deployed during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The Jericho 2 emerged in the 1970s with significantly extended range of 1,500-3,500 km, during a period when Iran and Israel secretly cooperated on military projects before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Israel's satellite launch vehicle Shavit shares similar engineering principles with Jericho ballistic missiles.
TBN Israel's Yair Pinto reports on the Israel-U.S. war with Iran and regional conflict. Mati Shoshani looks at Israel's most secretive strategic weapon, the Jericho missile family, against the backdrop of Iran rebuilding its ballistic missile production and the IAEA's inability to verify Iran's enriched uranium stockpile. He traces the program from the French-built Jericho 1 through Jericho 2 and Jericho 3, including the little-known 1970s Israeli-Iranian cooperation on "Project Flower," and stresses throughout that nearly everything public comes from foreign estimates, not Israeli confirmation. The report explains why Israel needs a strategic deterrent beyond its air force, why a weapon like this may be most valuable when it is never fired, and what "second-strike" capability means for an enemy considering a first strike.
