How does a changing moral character
[00:01]
affect romance? In Einran's We the
[00:04]
Living, the main characters to two love
[00:05]
interests go through opposite character
[00:07]
arcs. Kira's early love for the educated
[00:10]
and aristocratic Leo is challenged as he
[00:12]
becomes more cynical, reckless,
[00:15]
inconsiderate of her, and even
[00:16]
unprincipled. For much of the novel,
[00:18]
though, she is devoted to his well-being
[00:20]
and never questions that devotion. Does
[00:22]
his past virtue mean that he deserves
[00:24]
that devotion? Does the regime's
[00:26]
persecution of him excuse his later
[00:28]
actions? On the other hand, there's her
[00:30]
friend Andre, a Soviet officer she
[00:32]
completely disagrees with politically.
[00:34]
But over the course of the novel, he
[00:35]
makes lots of important realizations,
[00:37]
including moral ones, in large part
[00:39]
because of his love for her. He grows
[00:42]
considerably as a person. Does this mean
[00:44]
that ultimately he deserves her? Would
[00:46]
they ever be happy together
[00:47]
romantically? The novel weaves together
[00:49]
the political views of the characters,
[00:51]
the conditions they face, and the
[00:52]
choices they make to make a changing
[00:54]
landscape of a love triangle. One that
[00:56]
offers deep questions and intense
[00:58]
emotions.
