I am furious about the tagline on one of
[00:02]
the posters for the new sense and
[00:04]
sensibility movie. [music] Being
[00:05]
agreeable never did a woman any good. On
[00:08]
the surface, this sounds like a girl
[00:10]
power sentiment, which is all well and
[00:12]
good, but if you dive in a little, it
[00:14]
falls apart [music] entirely. Most
[00:16]
importantly, the tagline has nothing to
[00:17]
do with the story at all. Austin's
[00:20]
incredible novel is about two sisters
[00:21]
who learn from each other how to better
[00:23]
manage their emotions and their [music]
[00:25]
relationships. In Marian's case, her
[00:27]
fundamental problem is not that she's
[00:28]
too agreeable. It's that she needs to
[00:31]
learn to introspect and understand her
[00:32]
emotions and how to express them [music]
[00:34]
better. In Elellanar's case, she learns
[00:36]
to not ignore or hide her emotions,
[00:38]
which superficially could be seen as
[00:40]
being less agreeable, but it really does
[00:42]
improve her relationships with the
[00:43]
people who are closest to her. None of
[00:45]
this story is about nonconformity or
[00:47]
about not being agreeable. Arguably,
[00:50]
Marian's arc involves her becoming more
[00:52]
agreeable by becoming more thoughtful
[00:54]
about what she's expressing and who
[00:56]
she's speaking to. I understand there is
[00:59]
a history of women being taught that
[01:01]
they should put being agreeable over
[01:02]
more important priorities, and that
[01:05]
could legitimately be the subject of a
[01:06]
movie set in this era, but this is
[01:08]
supposed to be an adaptation of a
[01:10]
beloved and thought-provoking classic.
[01:12]
And if that is the lesson the filmmakers
[01:14]
got from it, they read an entirely
[01:16]
different book.
