It seems that Succot three years ago was the last time there was a semblance of unadulterated joy for Jews - in Israel, & around the world.
But as thousands of years of memory that the Jewish people are entrusted to carry through time & space, & that days later we were brutally reminded of - there’s no such thing.
The haunting pictures of remainders of Succot destroyed, shot at, standing still & silent for months - that bore witness to the atrocities of the October 7 massacre - were a haunting reminder of what must never be forgotten.
Humanity must never take what we achieve for granted. Freedom is not, and was never, free. The semblance of stability we achieve must never become cause to ignore our vulnerability. We must never let our guard down from those intent to destroy freedom & humanity, by all means necessary.
“…Succot is the festival of insecurity. It is the candid acknowledgment that there is no life without risk, yet we can face the future without fear when we know we are not alone.…in the resilience of spirit that allowed a small and vulnerable people to outlive the greatest empires the world has ever known...A Temple can be destroyed. But a succah, even if broken, can be rebuilt tomorrow.” The Rabbi Sacks Legacy
We will rejoice again, in Succot of peace & hope, with courage & humility.
Chag sameach & Shabbat Shalom
