In an increasingly devolved UK, advocacy and engagement needs to be localised.
Earlier this week I enjoyed my first visit to Number 10 North to learn how this new arm of Government will spread opportunity around the country and make our national leadership more accessible and accountable to those beyond London.
It was also a real delight to sit down with newly-elected Mayor of Greater Manchester Bev Craig. She is one smart cookie and we wish her every success in her new role, where she leads the region with the UK’s second-largest Jewish population.
For some years now, the Jewish community, in its own small way, had been seeking to regionalise its national structures.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews has for some years had its brilliant Regional Manager Sara Radivan , based in Manchester, but serving the whole country. The Jewish Leadership Council a few years back set about employing Regional Engagement Managers, starting with the legendary Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester and Region CEO Marc Levy, who are such an invaluable asset to our communal infrastructure.
Together with them, and our Vice President Jeremy Michelson, who is also Manchester-based and represents a Manchester synagogue on the Board of Deputies, we are increasingly learning that a local presence, and a determination to bring every part of our country into decision making, goes a long way towards ensuring a more united and inclusive communal leadership.
